Staying Home With Your Dog Instead of Going Out? You Might Be a DINKWAD

If you’ve ever skipped a party because your dog looked too cute curled up on the couch, you’re not alone. A new survey of 2,000 dog parents reveals what many of us already know in our hearts: life revolves around our dogs, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

According to the study by Talker Research, the average dog owner makes 27 decisions a month based on their pup, from choosing vacation spots to adjusting work schedules. Many even admit to canceling social plans four times a month, or cutting evenings short six times simply because their dog couldn’t come along or needed them at home.

More Than Just Dogs, They’re Fur Babies

What stood out most in the survey was a special group of pet parents known as DINKWADs. That’s short for Double Income, No Kids, With A Dog.

A whopping 71% of DINKWADs said their life revolves around their dog, and 63% consider their pup their “child.” These dog moms and dads don’t just love their pets, they prioritize them in every part of life, from dinner plans to décor.

It’s more than just sentiment. DINKWADs are putting their money where their heart is. On average, they spend $172 more per year on their dogs compared to other owners, investing in high-quality food, vet care, toys, and plenty of extras, from monogrammed blankets to pet furniture.

For them, birthdays and special outings aren’t just for people. A day at the beach, a homemade birthday meal, these are regular ways they show love to their fur baby.

Prioritizing Pup’s Nutrition

Since the doggos are basically their children, DINKWADS pay special attention to what they are feeding their precious furbabies. 80% of them carefully study the ingredient list on commercial dog food packs. Meanwhile, 66% of these dog owners consider the dog food brand’s overall reputation before buying their products.

When it comes to their furry family members, these devoted pet parents aren’t just buying dog food. They’re making well-researched, intentional choices to ensure their pups stay happy and healthy.

So if you’ve ever canceled a plan, rearranged your workday, or spent hours researching the best dog food, don’t feel guilty. You’re just like the rest of us, completely, joyfully, and unapologetically ruled by your dog.

Pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka responded to the research, saying, “When people prioritize their dogs like this, with thoughtful choices around food, care, and time, it shows just how deep the human-animal bond runs. It’s beautiful.”
