She Was Starving and Pregnant—What Happened Next Stunned Everyone
Pregnancy demands special care for any dog—but for too many, abandonment turns that journey into a fight for survival. That was the heartbreaking reality for Gracie, a malnourished, heavily pregnant stray found on the streets of New York City. She was taken to the Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) (ACC) in desperate condition, just days from giving birth. (Watch Video Above)
Abandoning any pet is an act of cruelty, but leaving a pregnant dog to fend for herself is particularly heartless. When Brooklyn-based AMA Animal Rescue learned of Gracie’s situation, they knew they had to intervene.
The rescue team quickly acted, transferring her from the shelter to a nurturing foster home where she could finally rest and receive the critical care she needed.

Neglected Mama Giving Birth
A few days after Gracie was found, she gave birth to a litter of three adorable puppies. She had chosen a comfy spot in her foster home’s bathroom where she felt safe enough for the birthing process. (watch the video below)
After the rescue, @amaanimalrescue posted the video of Gracie and her puppies, and a wave of comments came pouring in. Maggie Surowiec commented, “God bless you for rescuing Gracie and her beautiful babies ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️” Another Instagram user, Carol Darling, wrote, “Congrats to all of you and, of course, Gracie. Yes lots of love, treats, and soft cushy blankets. God Bless this little family … will be praying for your health and safe keeping. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️”
Caring For Pregnant Dogs
Fortunately, both mother and pups faced no complications and are doing well. However, Gracie will need much time and appropriate care to recover and regain strength. This is so because pregnant dog mothers need proper nutrition, which Gracie didn’t have access to for a long time.

So, if you are caring for a pregnant dog, you must be aware of their nutritional requirements. According to Pet Rescue Advocate Rocky Kanaka, “The most basic rule for dog owners to remember when choosing the best dog food for nursing dogs and pregnant dogs is quality first. A high-quality diet made from fresh ingredients and without filler can make all the difference for the health of your pregnant dog and her puppies.”
Hopefully, Gracie and her pups will turn out fine, healthy, and ready for adoption soon. In the meantime, you can donate funds to AMA Animal Rescue or provide a home to any of their adoptable animals.
