She May Have Cropped Ears & a Funny-Looking Tongue, But Her Love Is Like No Other
If you could ask every staff member at the Humane Society of Broward County to mention the friendliest dogs under their care, one name would come up too many times: Lickitung.
5-year-old Lickitung — or Licki, as she’s fondly nicknamed — is the type of dog who’ll prove to you, from the moment you meet her, that she’s an absolute lovebug. But once you learn her backstory, you’ll immediately realize that her sweet personality is nothing short of extraordinary. We’re not sure if it was a breeding operation, but Licki has definitely had her share of puppies 😔 When she arrived she was suffering from ear infections, skin allergies and had to undergo entropic surgery to her eyelids ❤️🩹 She also has crusty skin where her ears were cropped and her tongue always hangs out of her mouth 🥺 Despite all of this, Licki is one of the friendliest and most loving dogs you will meet ❤️ She’s good with all people (even babies) and all dog personalities, and she is ok with cats. She knows commands like sit, lay and go, will go on short walks only, and she loves to eat everything (although her skin allergies may limit what she can eat). She’s very affectionate and mostly just wants to be close to you getting belly rubs ❤️ Lickitung will likely be prone to reoccuring ear infections, so at home maintenance (e.g. ear cleanings) and veterinary care may be needed if infections recur ❤️🩹 Can you help this happy girl on her journey to good health? A Life of Pain & Neglect
Before coming to the shelter, Licki endured a miserable life. She spent years living in a cramped space crowded with 11 other dogs; life was chaotic, stressful, and unkind to her. Nobody cared about Licki’s comfort, health, or happiness. The shelter suspects Licki was repeatedly used for breeding, her value as a dog reduced to the number of puppies her body could churn out.
When Licki was finally rescued and brought to the Humane Society, the years of neglect were evident. She had painful ear infections, untreated skin allergies, and eyelid problems that made it hard for her to blink without experiencing pain. Licki’s ears had also been cropped, leaving the remaining skin dry and crusty.
What stood out most about Licki was the state of her tongue. Her entire tongue hung out on the side of her mouth, and though the shelter couldn’t tell what exactly led to this, they quickly embraced it as Licki’s most endearing quirks.
Thankfully, Licki underwent surgery to correct her eyelid problems. She also received treatment for her ear infections and skin allergies, and as we speak, she’s way much better health-wise.
A Lover Girl Through & Through
Licki has no limits on how much she can trust and adore people. Despite the neglect she endured at the hands of uncaring humans, Licki arrived at the shelter with a heart wide open to give and receive love. She sees every human as her safe space; she’s always the happiest girl when around someone.
Trust us, when you hang out with Licki, everything about her will make you smile a little too hard: her signature tongue, her red merle coat, and the way she flops over in surrender once you begin to scratch her belly. Licki is a true example of a soul who embraces every ounce of kindness without hesitation because she had gone for far too long without experiencing it. And now, she’s at a point in life where she craves to start afresh in a loving home that she can call her own.

Ever met a dog who gets along with literally anyone and everyone? That’s Licki for you. She’s great with babies, small children, adults, cats, other dogs — you name it! What we’re trying to say is, Licki doesn’t discriminate against who gets a space in her big heart.
She’s well-mannered, knows commands, loves short walks, and would prefer to add peace rather than chaos to your life. Licki is simply asking for a family that will love and care for her endlessly. She knows she’s far from perfect — she’s prone to recurring ear infections and might need a special diet because of her allergies. But all she yearns for is someone to see past her imperfections because she’s the easiest dog to love. We’re not even exaggerating; she truly is.
