See Shelter Dog Literally Hug Her Rescuer on Adoption Day—You’ll Cry Tears of Joy
Two years ago, a tiny white and grey Pitbull mix puppy named Ruby came to the Desert Dog Project, a rescue that takes in only the most overlooked dogs, and those in need of extra medical care. Ruby got all the care she needed and was soon ready for adoption, but it can be difficult to adopt out Pitbulls. Thankfully (or so everyone thought) a family adopted little Ruby fairly quickly, and she was off to enjoy her new home.
@desertdogproject Ruby was VERY happy to be going home today. This perfect girl was at the shelter two years ago as a puppy. She came back in a few weeks ago, and her owners never came for her. It’s only good days from here on out!👏🏻🥹❤️

In the world of animal rescue, we always hope that adoptions will work out and be permanent, but sadly, that’s not always the case. Several years after her first adoption, Ruby returned to the Desert Dog Project, and her original family never came to claim her. Entering the shelter system even once can be very traumatic for a dog, but finding yourself in a shelter twice would be even more overwhelming. Ruby had lost her family and was now somewhere undeniably stressful as all shelters are, no matter how much time and effort volunteers and staff take to try to give the animals comfort.
Ruby had known the love of a family, but now she was starting from square one on her journey to finding a forever home.
Ruby Finds a Match: The Most Joyful Adoption Day

Though staff at DDP were more than happy to love on this sweet pup, she needed a home of her own—this social, affectionate dog wasn’t getting all the attention and love she so desperately needed. Hopefully, someone would notice how bursting with joy she was.
As luck would have it, Ruby only had to spend a few weeks at the Desert Dog Project. A potential adopter connected with her right away and knew she had to be his dog. He applied and was approved, and all that was left was to give Ruby the good news and get her ready to go home.
On adoption day, Ruby couldn’t contain her excitement. Leaning back against her new dad, Ruby had a huge smile plastered on her face. After some belly rubs and wiggles, Ruby had to make her feelings truly known and stood up on her hind legs to give her new dad a huge hug! It was like Ruby had met the person she belonged with all along, and her new dad felt exactly the same way.
If seeing how much joy you can bring to a dog even on the first day you are together has inspired you to adopt a dog, visit your local shelter to see if your new best friend is there waiting for you.
