Pit Bull Was Skin and Bones, Dumped Outside a Police Station, But His Tail Never Stopped Wagging

Some dogs endure the worst ordeal before they finally find a glimmer of hope. Astro is one of those dogs. He was found tied to garbage cans outside a police station in New York, abandoned, injured, and afraid. When he arrived at the Queens ACC shelter, it was clear he had suffered greatly. (Watch Video Above)

He was dangerously underweight, his body showing signs of neglect, sloughed paw pads, and he limped from a painful injury to his hind legs. But even in his broken state, there was still a spark in him, waiting to be seen, saved, and loved.

He Was Skin and Bones, But Still Full of Love

Even after escaping his abusive past, Astro’s life was still in danger. Just a week after arriving at the shelter, he was placed on the euthanasia list. Tucked away in a corner kennel, he still had hope. His damaged hind legs barely supported his thin frame, but that didn’t stop him from wagging his tail the moment a volunteer approached, thrilled just to be noticed.

That simple, joyful reaction moved the volunteer deeply, who took him to a quiet room where Astro could stretch, play, and just be a dog for a moment. Despite his frail body and painful injuries, Astro lit up with affection, soaking up every pet, every treat, as if he’d been waiting his whole life for that kind of kindness.

It’s heartbreaking to think that a dog this sweet, this full of love, came so close to dying without ever truly being cared for.

New Chance For The Sweet Dog

While the ACC medical team had done all they could, Astro’s survival depended on someone stepping up to give him the second chance he deserved. That’s why volunteers put out an urgent plea to save him because he needed a home where he could heal, both physically and emotionally.

Their efforts paid off just in time. Astro was pulled from the euthanasia list by New York-based Pound Hound ResQ. In a recent update, the rescue shared that the Pittie is finally gaining weight and beginning to recover.

Veterinary evaluations revealed that his leg injury likely stems from past trauma, resulting in a partial tear to the calcaneal tendon in his left leg. While his exact treatment plan is still being worked out, the rescue is committed to doing everything possible to help this brave dog get back on his feet, both physically and emotionally.

Pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka shared his thoughts on Astro’s journey, saying, “Astro is proof that even after the worst kind of betrayal, a dog’s heart still has room for love, and all it takes is one person to believe in them.”
