Pit Bull Saved from Euthanasia Stuns Rescuers With His Happy-Go-Lucky Attitude — ‘He Makes His Own Sunshine’
When we think of the average shelter dog, most of us have the same picture come to mind: a sad-looking pup with more sorrowful days than happy moments. Well, there are exceptions, and one of them is Derrick Nnandi — a one-year-old Pit Bull Terrier currently at Pawportunities Animal Rescue in Blue Springs, Missouri. Derrick arrived at the rescue in December last year from a shelter where he was scheduled to be euthanized. While the rescue was happy to have given Derrick a second chance at life, they became more glad about their choice once they got to know his one-of-a-kind personality.

He’s only 1 year old, and already wise beyond his age. Derrick is simply a happy dog, easy going, and able to make the best of any situation. He’s the calm in the storm. A stable rock. A Dog Like No Other
Derrick isn’t like the average shelter dog. He has a happy-go-lucky attitude that even staff and volunteers at the rescue can’t make sense of, given how close to death this pup was a few weeks ago.
Derrick makes it seem as though life is all about buttercups and rainbows owing to how cheerful he is most of the time. When other dogs in the opposite kennels vocalize their desperation for forever homes by barking and whining loudly, Derrick is usually observed sitting calmly in his kennel, ready to wiggle his body and unleash his ear-to-ear smile to anyone who throws a glance at him. If not this, you’ll catch him playfully spinning inside his kennel as he tries to defluff his stuffed toys.
When Derrick is let outside to catch a break from his lonely kennel, his lively personality stands out. He will play and jump around like it’s his last, not allowing his lack of a home to steal his joy. Staff describe him as a dog who likes to “make his own sunshine,” which, unsurprisingly, is their favorite thing about him. All that’s now remaining is for Derrick to find a forever person to share these positive vibes with.
