Ohio Man Tried to Strangle His Elderly Dog to Avoid Euthanasia Fee—Now the Public Demands Justice for Tinkerbell
In a heartbreaking and deeply disturbing act of cruelty, a senior dog named Tinkerbell was subjected to unimaginable suffering at the hands of the very person she trusted most. What should have been a peaceful farewell at a veterinary hospital turned into a horrifying ordeal when her owner chose brutality over compassion—all to avoid paying for humane euthanasia.
Now, animal advocates across the country are demanding justice for Tinkerbell—and calling for stronger protections to ensure no animal endures such cruelty again.

A Tragic Betrayal Inside the Exam Room
Richard Orth, 59, of East Price Hill, Ohio, brought his elderly dog Tinkerbell to a veterinary clinic in the Delhi Hills area with the stated intent of having her humanely euthanized due to her declining health. The veterinary team, following standard procedure, stepped out briefly to prepare the necessary medications for a peaceful and painless goodbye.

But in those few minutes, Orth allegedly chose a horrifying path. According to investigators and audio recordings from the scene, Orth was heard saying to his dog, “Go be with God. I won’t let you suffer. $500 is highway robbery.” He then attempted to strangle Tinkerbell, reportedly believing he was sparing her suffering—while in truth inflicting terror and trauma in her final moments.
Tinkerbell sustained severe injuries to her neck and, despite the best efforts of veterinary staff, had to be euthanized due to the trauma Orth caused.

A Preventable Act of Cruelty
What makes this tragedy even harder to bear is how easily it could have been avoided. Had Orth communicated his financial concerns, the clinic or local animal welfare groups might have been able to assist. Many veterinary offices offer payment plans or work with organizations that provide financial support for end-of-life care. Instead, Orth chose a brutal, illegal route that betrayed his loyal companion in her time of greatest need.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich condemned the act, stating, “There’s no excuse for what happened here. Our office is committed to holding those accountable who harm animals.” Orth now faces charges of cruel treatment of companion animals—a charge that could result in up to one year in prison if convicted.
The veterinary team, understandably shaken by the incident, had prepared to provide Tinkerbell with dignity and peace. Instead, they were left to grapple with the aftermath of violence they never expected inside their exam room.
A Call for Stronger Laws and Zero Tolerance
Tinkerbell’s story has ignited outrage and sorrow throughout the community and beyond. It serves as a painful reminder of the importance of accessible, affordable pet care—but also of the critical need for stronger animal cruelty laws that ensure no pet suffers such a fate.
Animal advocates are urging prosecutors to not only pursue the maximum penalty in this case but also to push for reforms that would bar offenders like Orth from ever owning or being responsible for another animal. Cost should never be used to justify cruelty.
