Owner Walks Away from Senior Dog with Cancer—Now He’s Begging for One Last Home

Imagine the people you love and trust most turning their backs on you when you’re at your lowest. It’s beyond heartbreaking, don’t you agree?

This is exactly what happened to Butterbean — a 12-year-old mixed breed — a couple of days ago. Butterbean had spent his entire life giving love, loyalty, and tail wags unconditionally. This sweet boy was there for his owner through the good and bad times; a constant source of joy and comfort to the person he considered his everything. (Watch Video Below)

But when Butterbean’s health started deteriorating due to a terminal case of cancer, he went from being a “cherished, wanted pet” to “a burden not worth keeping.” Butterbean’s owner wasn’t willing to stick around for his terminally ill pet, and so he did the unthinkable: he gave Butterbean away to two strangers in a hotel and walked away without a second thought.

Yes, Butterbean was left behind simply because he was no longer the healthy, happy-go-lucky pet that he was before cancer struck.

A Hospice Pup in a Shelter

Butterbean was eventually brought to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, where staff members and volunteers are doing their best to soothe his aching heart.

Sweet Butterbean didn’t deserve that level of betrayal from his owner. All he wanted was to have his family by his side during this dark, confusing chapter of his life, only for them to abandon him when he desperately needed them.

Seeing that defeated, sorrowful look on Butterbean’s face every single day hasn’t been the easiest thing to witness for staff members at the shelter. Butterbean is hurting, and everyone around him can notice that. No terminally ill dog wants to spend the remaining time they have left in an overwhelming environment like the shelter. Butterbean’s body may be failing with every passing day, but his heart still longs to feel loved.

While it’s not clear how much time Butterbean has left, what we know is that this lovely boy deserves dignity at this point in his life. Butterbean is a hospice dog, meaning he’s nearing the end of his life. The only thing that matters to him right now is finding a warm, quiet home where he can live out his remaining time.

Butterbean’s Counting on You for a Beautiful Ending

Butterbean has been a devoted pet all his life, so it’s only fair that he leaves this world knowing someone still saw his worth regardless of his “dying” status.

And if we’re being honest, giving a hospice pup like Butterbean a chance for a peaceful, dignified goodbye is one of the most emotionally rewarding things you can do. Knowing you were there for him to the very end — knowing that you were his last greatest gift — will change you in ways you never imagined. That we’re sure of.

If you’d love to give Butterbean a home where he’ll feel safe and deeply loved as he approaches his final days, please reach out to the Humane Society of the TC for more information.
