Meet the Most Gentle, Soft-Hearted Dog Who Nobody Chooses Because He’s “Too Big”

At the West LA Animal Shelter, staff and volunteers are heartbroken for one of their canine residents — Monty, a 3-year-old large mixed breed. Ever since Monty arrived at the shelter back in December 2023, he’s been nothing but a spectator of other dogs’ happy endings. (watch video below)

Monty has watched — and continues to watch — other dogs that came after him go home with their new families, while he remains unchosen. He’s so far not gotten a single adoption application, and the reason is soul-crashing: potential adopters consider him “too big.”

A Gentle Giant Through and Through

While the first thing you may notice about Monty is his intimidating appearance, staff at the shelter know this handsome boy inside out. To them, Monty’s large frame extends to his personality, too. He has the biggest heart; one that dishes out love to everyone like its confetti.

Contrary to how potential adopters visiting the shelter perceive him, Monty is the epitome of a gentle giant.

“He’s simply the sweetest lovebug who wouldn’t hurt a fly. It’s a pity that he hasn’t landed a forever home all this while because he possesses all the qualities of a perfect canine companion,” pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka says.

Monty craves to be chosen; he yearns to be part of a family. He continues to cling to the hope that someone out there will finally see beyond his big frame and give him a chance. Monty was recently in a foster home, and his foster family got to experience the soft-hearted dog he is underneath his fierce-looking exterior.

Could You Be Monty’s Forever Person?

There’s nothing ordinary about Monty, and it’s not just his looks. His personality is everything you could ever ask for in a dog.

Monty is super affectionate, loves to be around people, gets along exceptionally well with other dogs, cuddles like there’s no tomorrow, and is a playful pup with the cutest zoomies. He’s house-trained and crate-trained, and displays excellent leash manners. Interestingly, the shelter says that Monty exhibits potential as an emotional support dog, stating that his calm temperament enables him to handle stressful situations with “quiet grace.”

Monty will gladly accompany you for walks and other adventures. But if you want to relax on the couch on a slow day, he’ll be thrilled to keep you company. What we’re trying to say is, there’s nothing Monty loves more than being by his human’s side.

If you’d love to offer this gentle giant the forever home he’s longing for, please visit the West LA Animal Shelter’s website for details on his adoption.
