Mama Dog Overlooked While Puppies Get Adopted—Now She’s All Alone At The Shelter
Housing insecurity is one of the top reasons dogs are surrendered to shelters, whether because of discriminatory breed restrictions, financial crises, or suddenly losing housing. Zoe—a 9-year-old Pitbull mix—arrived at the Des Moines County Humane Society in December 2023 after her family survived a devastating house fire. The fire left their family scared and financially strained, and Zoe’s humans became unhoused. Her family surrendered Zoe to the shelter to keep her safe, but she wasn’t alone.
Puppies Go, Zoe’s Shelter Stay Drags On For 8 Months
Zoe had five puppies that had also survived. They could only rescue three of the pups on the night of the fire, but two more were miraculously found the following day in the wreckage. Zoe and her puppies were reunited, and despite a few singed hairs, they were safe and unharmed. The sweetest mama, Zoe was so good to her babies, and happily let shelter staff give them love, too.
In no time, Zoe’s puppies were old enough to be adopted, and all five quickly found forever homes. Sadly, no one applied to adopt Zoe, and she has now been sitting in the shelter since December 2023—more than eight months.
Zoe Desperately Seeks a Forever Home
Zoe is sweet, energetic, and playful—she loves to run, go for walks, and have a good romp. Staff at the Des Moines County Humane Society say she might be nine, but she acts like she’s five!
After a day of playing and exploring, Zoe is super affectionate. She loves to give kisses and is desperate for a human to give all her love to. She wants to be an only dog so she can enjoy all of her family’s attention.
Zoe is not dog-friendly and is not suitable for a home with cats, but she loves kids! She would really like to be the center of her human’s world and isn’t interested in sharing. At around 45 pounds, this brindle girl is a beautiful medium-large dog with plenty of playful loving energy left for her golden years.
