Lost and Cold, a Stray Mama and Her Pup Had Nowhere to Go—Then a Miracle Happened
Houston’s rare freezing temperatures brought an unexpected twist for Andrea Soliz, a local warehouse worker who stumbled upon a stray dog and her puppy on one of the coldest nights of the year.
“It only freezes in Houston once every couple of years, and at this time, Houston was going to freeze over. That’s when I noticed Nixi and her puppy,” Andrea recalls.

The mother dog and her pup roamed near the warehouse where Andrea worked, wary of human interaction but clearly in need of help. A coworker placed food out for them, but fear kept them at a distance. As temperatures continued to drop, Andrea returned the next morning with fresh food and water, setting up blankets inside the warehouse in hopes of luring them to safety. But despite the warmth and comfort waiting for them, Nixi and her puppy bolted, leaving Andrea heartbroken and fearing for their survival.
Against the Odds: A Reunion in the Morning
The following morning, Andrea rushed back, bracing for the worst. To her relief, Nixi and her puppy had found their way into the warehouse and curled up in the blankets she had set out. Wasting no time, she carefully placed them in her car and set off to find a shelter that could take them in.
One by one, every shelter she visited turned them away. But fate had other plans. At the final shelter, Andrea met a couple searching for a puppy to adopt. In an unexpected moment of serendipity, Nixi’s puppy found a loving home that day—but that left Nixi alone, her future uncertain.
A Forever Home, Just One Night Away
Determined not to leave Nixi without a place to go, Andrea took her home for the night, believing it would be temporary. But from the moment they walked through the door, something changed.
“She stayed with me, and that was it. I couldn’t let her go!” Andrea says. “The first night with Nixi, she immediately just wanted to be held.”
