Lonely Hospice Dog Desperately Howling for a Forever Home Will Leave You in Tears
Forget about puppies and young adult dogs for a second. If there’s a group of shelter dogs that badly desire a forever home, it’s hospice dogs. And it’s easy to see why. As these special dogs approach the end of life, all they want is to spend their remaining days with a family to call their own. Not in solitude.
It’s saddening to imagine that there are countless hospice dogs out there stuck in shelters because no one seems to want them, and this is exactly what Big Red — an elderly hospice dog currently at the Austin Animal Center in Texas — is going through (Learn more about hospice dogs here).
A Howl of Desperation
For Big Red, nothing matters to him more than walking out of the shelter with a loving foster or adoptive family that will care for him until his time comes. Unfortunately, no one so far has offered him the home he deeply yearns to be a part of. In a heartbreaking video shared to TikTok, Big Red is captured howling in sadness, a testament to his desperation for a home.
“The shelter is desperately seeking a foster or adopter so that he can live out the rest of his life in a home. The shelter will work with you to cover any medical expenses. He just needs a soft place to land,” reads part of the caption accompanying the short clip.

Could You Give Big Red His Happy Ending?
There’s one common trait that almost all elderly dogs languishing in shelter kennels possess: the ability to love with every ounce in them out of gratitude.
These dogs love hard because of the gratitude they have toward those who offered them a home when everyone else walked past them. That’s exactly what you’ll get when you give Big Red a chance. By opening up your home to him, he’ll reciprocate the favor by spending his remaining days adding joy to your life. He deserves to feel cherished and cared for at this stage in his life, and he needs you now more than ever.
