Imagine spending your whole life enjoying the comfort of a warm home, only for your world to turn upside down at a time when you need love the most. That’s the heartbreaking reality of 11-year-old Hollywood and 10-year-old Jackson, two senior siblings currently at the Humane Society Naples.

Together their entire lives, they’ve faced heartbreak, losing not one but two owners who passed away. Hollywood, who is currently battling cancer, is on fospice care with all medical costs fully covered by Humane Society Naples. Jackson is part of our Senior Dog Care Club, which includes $500 in goods and services at our clinic to help keep him healthy. Both adoption fees are waived! For years, Hollywood and Jackson woke up every morning to the familiar voice and sight of the person who cherished them more than anything. Then, in one day, everything changed. Their beloved owner passed away, and the only home they had ever known disappeared in a heartbeat.
Hollywood and Jackson never imagined a time would come when they’d rest their weary bones on the cold floors of a kennel and not on a soft bed. But this is their reality now. Even though the weight of kennel loneliness is slowly pressing down on them, these two pups are trying their best to find comfort in the one thing they have left — each other.
Two Golden Hearts, One Wish
What’s more heartbreaking about Hollywood and Jackson’s situation is that they’ve experienced loss twice. Their first owner, just like the last one, passed away. Unfortunately this time around, this furry duo had no one to care for them when their owner died, so they had to be brought to the shelter.
The harsh truth is that Hollywood and Jackson’s arrival at the shelter would have been avoided if only their owner had a succession estate plan. With a succession plan in place as a dog owner, you can be confident that your canine friend will have someone to care for them when you’re gone, and not end up at the shelter.
“Every pet owner, regardless of age or health status, should consider creating estate planning for pets. While the immediate thought might be that only older individuals or those with severe health conditions need a plan, the unpredictability of life makes it essential for all,” pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka says.
Back at the shelter, Hollywood and Jackson remain more bonded than ever. And as they curl up together every night, making silent promises to each other that they’ll stick together no matter what, their hearts constantly ache with the same wish — that someone will see beyond their age and give them a chance.
