I don’t know how a little dog like this ends up at the shelter. A small scruffy Maltese type dog. Hard to image this pup wandering around for too long. This is the story of Keanu, a name bestowed by Mel, the shelter groomer, for reasons that would soon become abundantly clear.
A Found Friend
Keanu’s adventure began when he was discovered by a kind stranger, wandering alone and eventually brought to our shelter. “He just wanted belly rubs,” the person who found him said. It’s disheartening to think of him alone out there, but Keanu’s story is one of hope.
The Makeover
Upon arrival, it was clear Keanu needed care. His coat was in bad shape, and he was dealing with pests and a diet that did him no favors. Mel took to the task with enthusiasm, giving him the bath, grooming, and love he desperately needed. “After his bath, Mel’s ready to get him dry, and it looks like he’s ready too,” I noted, watching the transformation unfold.
A Name and a New Look
Why Keanu? Beyond just a celebrity namesake, his name means “cool breeze over the mountains” in Hawaiian, mirroring his calm demeanor. Post-grooming, Keanu was practically a new dog – clean, soft, and with a personality that charmed everyone at the shelter. “He’s basically a celebrity here,” I remarked, proud of how far he had come.

After his transformation, the next step for Keanu was finding a home, and fortunately, it didn’t take long. A family, having seen his story, decided he was the perfect addition to their lives.
