Sometimes, life throws you painful circumstances that make it hard to care for your dog as they deserve. This is exactly what happened to Blue a few weeks ago, after her owner made the heartbreaking decision to surrender her to Mercy Full Project in Tampa, FL.
It’s not that Blue’s owner didn’t love his dog; he adored her to bits. But as much as Blue meant the world to him, love alone couldn’t erase the harsh realities he was facing. And so, with a heavy heart, he opted to surrender Blue to the shelter, where he at least felt she’d be safe in the hands of caring staff. (Watch Video Below)
A recent TikTok video capturing the moment Blue’s owner bid her goodbye is breaking hearts everywhere, and it’s honestly hard to watch without tearing up.

A Painful Goodbye
In the video, posted by the shelter @mercyfullproject, you can hear Blue’s owner trying to hold it together as he explains to the staff what his pup likes and dislikes. It’s clear he wants to make sure they have the right information to care for Blue the way he always did. As he explains himself, Blue can be seen jumping on him in desperation. You’d almost think she’s sensing that her world is about to change.
When it’s time for him to go, Blue is seen jumping on him from behind, as if begging to leave the shelter together. The video shows Blue’s owner turning around and crouching down to give her a goodbye kiss. At this point, you can feel the brokenness in his shaky voice as he encourages Blue to keep being a good girl. It’s impossible to ignore the sadness and confusion on Blue’s face when her owner finally walks out, and the door closes behind her. What breaks our hearts more is the way she keeps staring at the door, as though silently hoping her owner will change his mind and come back for her.
Healing, a Day at a Time
From the very moment her owner walked out the door, Blue shut down completely. Everyone at the shelter could tell she was grieving the loss of the only family she’d ever known. Blue struggled to adjust to her new reality, and with every passing day, the stressful kennel environment weighed heavily on her. Luckily, it didn’t take long for Blue to land a foster home.
As we speak, Blue is trying to start afresh in a loving foster home away from the overwhelming shelter environment. She is still learning to face life without her previous owner, and though she’s yet to fully come out of her shell, she’s taking small steps forward in her healing. Her foster mom is patient with her, as she understands that a dog like Blue needs time to open her heart again at her own pace.
While nobody knows when Blue’s broken heart will heal, everyone’s optimistic that the next chapter of her life will erase every single traumatic memory of this painful surrender.
