So small he was mistaken for a rabbit, Bean had suffered what would later be revealed as multiple fractures in his hind leg. Taken to a shelter, Bean’s prospects were grim. In crowded shelters, badly injured animals like Bean often face euthanasia simply because the cost and care required are too high. His leg hung limp, like a noodle, and while shelter staff had started him on pain medication, his future was uncertain.
