Found Abandoned in a Trailer, Severely Matted Lhasa Apso Now Looks Like a Whole New Dog
Just a few months ago, Lulu — a 12-year-old Lhasa Apso — was deep in the trenches of pain and neglect. When the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) was alerted to a heartlessly abandoned and matted senior pup living in a trailer in deplorable conditions, this particular rescue would make their hearts heavy with pity.
Lulu’s matted coat made her unrecognizable, so much so that her rescuers couldn’t differentiate her front from her back. She was in extreme pain, and her coat was filthy from all the urine and feces it had soaked up. As soon as the BC SPCA rescue team saw Lulu, they felt they had to do everything possible to change her story.

She was immediately brought to a veterinary clinic for a sedated shave to relieve her pain and distress. The dog revealed after the shave was tiny, with black and white fur. This senior pup was so thankful to be free. After going through ear, skin, dental care and a spay surgery, Lulu was placed in a foster home where she could recover while receiving extra love and attention. Grooming & Health Checks
Acting swiftly, the rescuers transported Lulu to a veterinary clinic where she underwent a much-needed grooming session. Nobody was prepared for the sweet-faced, small-bodied pup that would be unleashed after the thorough shave.
“With the amount of fur she had, we thought she was a medium-sized dog. It was a huge shock when we picked her up after her shave and realized she is actually a 10 lbs Lhasa Apso,” stated Jasen Nyrose, a manager with the BC SPCA.
With the weight of the matted fur off her, Lulu instantly felt brand new. Unfortunately, the prolonged matting left her skin irritated and infected. Plus after undergoing an extensive medical examination, the veterinary team also discovered that Lulu had a horrible ear infection and decayed teeth that needed to be extracted. Not to mention, she required a spay surgery.
Thankfully, the BC SPCA ensured she received the treatment and surgery she needed to enjoy a happier, pain-free life.
A Foster Fail
When Lulu underwent her spay surgery, a BC SPCA volunteer offered to foster her so she could recover in a loving environment. Little did this volunteer know that the desire to give Lulu a forever home would grow with every waking moment that they spent together. Convinced that Lulu had probably never felt loved and wanted, she made the decision to adopt her and give her the best life possible.
“I can’t imagine our home without Lulu in it. After everything she had been through, I am so happy we get to love her and take care of her for the rest of her life,” Amy, Lulu’s new owner, stated.
Goodbye Suffering
Looking at Lulu blossoming in her new home now, one can’t dispute that she is exactly where she belongs. She never has to worry about experiencing abandonment ever again, thanks to her loving forever family — including her dog sibling — who adore her to bits.
Despite all she endured in the hands of those she thought meant well for her, she’s opened her heart to loving wholeheartedly again. Her fur has grown back healthily, and her jovial personality is on one of the best things about her. Lulu’s transformation is a testament to the power of kindness towards needy dogs and the resilience that these lovely animals carry within them.
