Elton John and his husband David Furnish are mourning the loss of their beloved dog Marilyn, who recently passed away just shy of her 18th birthday. David shared an adorable photo of Marilyn on Instagram, along with a touching tribute to their furry companion. Marilyn joined the Furnish-John family as a companion to Elton’s beloved cocker spaniel Arthur, who was reportedly the best man at their 2005 wedding.
Elton John is well-known for his love of animals and is reported to own over 20 dogs. Along with Arthur and Marilyn, the couple also owns three other American Cocker Spaniels. Marilyn played an important role in the family’s life, serving as a fiercely loyal and protective mother to Elton and David’s sons, Zachary and Elijah, when they first came home from the hospital.
According to David, Marilyn was like a sentry posted at the door, instinctively knowing about the importance of their arrival. She lay directly under their prams keeping vigil and occasionally popping her head up over the edge to check on their well-being with her tail wagging away madly. Nobody outside of the family was allowed near those boys, thanks to Marilyn’s fierce loyalty and protection.
David shared that Marilyn and Arthur traveled the world with them, from backstage at Caesar’s Palace to the gondolas of Venice. Life was never dull with them charging around. David also mentioned that Marilyn is back together with Arthur now, charging around in doggie heaven and chasing rabbits.
Arthur himself has made appearances in Elton John’s music, as he is mentioned in the album credits of Elton’s 2006 album, The Captain and the Kid, as “Arthur: woof-bells.” Elton and David clearly love their dogs and include them in many aspects of their lives, from walking them on the red carpet to featuring them in their music.
