Detroit Dog Survives Poisoning and Brutal Abuse—Now He Just Wants a Place to Feel Safe

Sometimes, dogs remind us how to hold onto hope, even after facing the worst of humanity. Sir Squish a Lot, a gentle giant, endured unimaginable cruelty when he took refuge in the back of a building in a Detroit neighborhood. (Watch Video Below)

Residents threw glass bottles at him and even poisoned him. The heartbreaking abuse was captured on a neighbor’s Ring camera—someone who chose compassion and contacted the local dog rescue, Rebel Dogs Detroit, to intervene and save his life.

Trusting Humans—Only to Face Cruelty

The camera footage showed residents had deliberately left out poisoned food for the unsuspecting dog, who innocently ate what he thought was a meal. As if that weren’t enough, they hurled glass bottles at him, trying to drive him away.

It took days for the Rebel Dogs team to locate the dog but once they did, it was a heartbreaking sight. Sir Squish a Lot was discovered cowering in fear in a corner of a yard with shattered glass pieces all around him.

No living being should go through such human cruelty, especially a dog as sweet as Sir Squish a Lot.

When the rescue team approached him, the canine was understandably nervous. But the moment they offered him some wet food, he found the courage to inch closer and eat.

However, the leash frightened him, so the team gently lured him toward the car with treats. Once inside, they carefully secured him with a slip lead, moving slowly to avoid adding to his fear. Despite his fearful body language, his eyes held a quiet hope—for safety, kindness, and a second chance.

Rescued, But Still Waiting To Heal

At the rescue, they discovered he had no collar, tag, or microchip, making it nearly impossible to trace an owner. Now, this gentle soul just needs a quiet foster home to decompress and feel safe.

A few days after the foster plea, Rebel Dogs updated the dog’s situation on Facebook, saying, “Just want to put on here that he has zero applications! Everybody that said they applied did not! He is still looking for A Foster!”

So, if you can offer love, patience, and a soft place to land, Sir Squish a Lot is ready to fill your home with quiet gratitude. Apply to foster him today, he deserves to know kindness after all he’s endured at the hands of cruel humans.

Pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka says it best: “What happened to Sir Squish a Lot is heartbreaking, but what’s even more powerful is his ability to forgive. Dogs like him remind us that love can survive even the worst cruelty. He’s not just looking for a home—he’s looking for someone to show him that kindness still exists.”
