Chihuahuas are the Most Popular Dog. But are They the Most Overrated?

Dogs are the most popular pet in America, with 49 million households calling a canine friend a family member. But there’s one dog that takes the cake – the chihuahua!

According to a recent study, chihuahuas are the most popular breed in America, with the chihuahua coming in as the number one most owned breed in 21 states. 4% of all dogs in the country are chihuahuas! Chihuahuas might be the top dog, but personally, I think they are completely overrated. Here me out…

Chihuahuas are the Most Popular Dog. But are They the Most Overrated?

The Ultimate Purse Dog

The popularity of the chihuahua took off when Paris Hilton wouldn’t be caught dead without her dog-turned-accessory, TInkerbell, in the early aughts. But this seems as if it set a bad example, leading the way for people  who just want something small and cute to cart around in their purses, next to their car keys and wallet. But pups – while not people – are not accessories either.

Chihuahuas are the Most Popular Dog. But are They the Most Overrated?

1. Not So Good With Kids

A survey conducted by Rocky Kanaka Media with shelters nationwide reveals insights into pet adoption dynamics. It highlights that Chihuahuas are the 5th most returned dog (after German Shepherds, Huskies and herding dogs) and the only small dog on the list. Known for their loyalty yet feisty behavior, they often bond with a single person, leading to jealousy and protective actions. Their small size and vulnerability to rough play make them less suitable for homes with young or active children.

2. Always Under Foot

Maybe it’s a good thing that chihuahuas are the smallest breed, because a dog any smaller would be a menace to society. Chihuahuas always seem to be under your feet, or hidden wherever you’re planning to sit – almost as if they have a sixth sense about where to position themselves for the most damage.

3. Not the Prettiest Pooch

Chihuahuas have been said to look like gremlins, and I can’t disagree. Smooth-haired chihuahuas got both short hair and the short end of the stick. Their big ears and bug eyes don’t quite fit with their tiny size.

4. A Big Dog in a Small Body

It’s always the tiny dogs that think they’re the size of a Great Dane. Pitbulls and rottweilers get a bad rap, while chihuahuas have gone under the radar when it comes to aggression! Chihuahuas yip like crazy whenever they don’t like something, which seems to be most of the time. Chihuahuas need to learn how to relax and go with the flow.

5. Everyone is a Stranger Danger

There’s a long list of things chihuahuas aren’t great with. Strangers. Friends. Family members. Children. Stuffed animals. Anything that goes within a two foot radius of their owner. Chihuahuas only seem to like one person – the person who feeds them – and everyone else goes on a long list of enemies.

Bad Owners Equals Bad Dogs

As they say, there are no bad dogs, only bad owners. And, unfortunately, some chihuahua owners back this up – especially if they’ve purchased a purse pooch. Many small dogs behave badly because their owners never bother to correct them, so they end up getting away with the worst behavior, like spoiled diva dogs. Even if a dog is the size of a large elf, it still has to be trained properly so it doesn’t act like a jerk.

What do you think? Are chihuahuas top dog, an underdog, or a bad dog?
