CCTV Captures Woman Abandoning Dog at Shelter—Then His Shocking Past From Mexico Emerges
Luke’s story is as heartbreaking as it is unbelievable. The 1-year-old Shepherd mix was recently left behind in the parking lot of a California animal shelter, an act caught on CCTV as a woman pulled up, let him out of her car, and drove away, leaving him confused and alone by a busy street outside Animal Friends of the Valleys (AFV). But as the shelter took Luke in and shared his story online, more details about his past began to surface. Shockingly, this wasn’t the first time Luke had been abandoned. His journey of survival began much earlier, on the streets of Mexico.
A Fragile Puppy Finds His First Chance at Safety
Luke wasn’t always the healthy, happy dog he is today. His life started in hardship, limping through the streets of Tijuana as a fragile little puppy. That’s where a kind-hearted woman first saw him and knew she couldn’t just walk away.

Even though she already had four dogs and a full household, she opened her heart and home to Luke. She became his foster mom, guiding him through every step of recovery, taking him to the vet, ensuring he was microchipped and vaccinated, and giving him the love he desperately needed.
As Luke grew stronger and more confident, his foster family began bringing him across the border to adoption events in California. Eventually, they placed him with an adopter who seemed like a good fit.
But what felt like the start of his forever turned into another heartbreaking twist in Luke’s journey.
Two Days of Forever Before Another Heartbreak

Just two days after being adopted at an event, Luke’s world came crashing down. The family who had taken him home drove to AFV and left him behind in the shelter’s parking lot. No one knows why they gave up on him so quickly, but the impact on Luke is undeniable. For a young dog who has already endured so much, another abandonment is a distressing setback.
Yet despite everything, Luke hasn’t lost his spirit. At just a year old, he’s full of life, love, and potential. He’s grown up around other dogs, making him an easy fit for families with pets, and he’s the kind of companion who just wants to be part of a loving home.

Pet Rescue Advocate Rocky Kanaka commented on one of Luke’s posts, writing, “Let’s get Luke out of the kennel and into someone’s heart.”
