Can You Guess What Breed These Four Shelter Dogs Are?

Many people believe that if they want a specific dog breed, they must go to a breeder to get it. In reality, you can find almost any dog breed at the shelter, including purebreds! Shelter staff members see so many dogs each day that they have become experts at identifying breeds, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still some guesswork involved. (Watch Video Below)

The shelter sees all kinds of dog breeds—some we know, some we really have to guess! 😅 Do you think we got them all right? Comment down what you think their breeds are! Some dogs surrendered to the shelter come with extensive background information from their previous owners that makes it easy to identify their breed. Other dogs come in with zero information, and may be mixed with a variety of breeds that make it hard to tell exactly what their parentage is. When these ambiguous dogs enter the shelter, staff members do their best to guess the majority of their breed background to give potential adopters as much information as possible. Still, if you get your rescue dog DNA tested, you might find some exciting surprises!

Animal Friends of the Valleys in Wildomar, California, shared a video that shows what breeds they assigned to different shelter dogs. As you can see in the video, some of them are obvious (like the Border Collie) while others are way harder to guess. Think you could do better? Let’s play a game and see if you can guess the breeds of these dogs at Animal Friends of the Valleys. The dogs featured in their TikTok video have all been adopted, but these cuties are still waiting for their forever homes.

We’ll start this one off easy with this gorgeous girl named Darla. She has a gorgeous red/tan mask on a solid black base, and she has some very tell-tale features of one breed in particular.

That’s right, Darla is a Doberman Pinscher! Now let’s try one that’s a little bit harder—meet Malory. Take a few extra seconds on this one, your first instinct could be close, but a little off.

If you said that Malory is a German Shepherd, you were on the right track, but not quite on the mark. Malory is a Belgian Malinois mix!

Still going strong? Let’s amp up the difficulty with Nobel. This big fluffy boy might be a challenge if you’re not familiar with livestock guardian breeds…and that’s the last hint I’m giving!

While he might look like an extra furry Golden Retriever, Nobel is a Great Pyrenees mix! If Nobel stumped you, get ready for our final contestant, who is sure to have even dog experts scratching their heads. Here is Snickers!

While it’s hard to be sure, staff at Animal Friends of the Valleys think Snickers is an Australian Cattle Dog mix—what was your guess?

Remember that all of these dogs and many more are waiting for loving homes—consider this a sign to visit your local shelter, meet the resident dogs, and see how much variety there is at the shelter.
