A Glimpse into Shelter Life
I’ve seen many things in my time working with shelter animals, but some cases stick with you more than others. One such case was a small, eight-year-old Pomeranian who arrived at the shelter in a condition that was nothing short of heartbreaking. (watch the full video above)
The Challenge at Hand
Mel, our skilled groomer, was quick to identify the urgent needs of this little dog. She was a stray, her fur matted and her skin in poor condition, a far cry from the Pomeranian’s typically luxurious coat. It was clear from the outset that this was going to be a challenging grooming session.
Beginning the Transformation
The grooming process revealed the severity of neglect the Pomeranian had suffered. Her fur was so matted that it seemed to mask her true appearance. As Mel worked, she discovered the dog’s skin was dry and flaky, indicative of the lack of care she had endured.
Unveiling the Neglect
As the grooming progressed, the extent of the neglect became more apparent. The Pomeranian’s skin was in terrible condition, covered in dead, dry skin. The most distressing part was the discovery of poo around her bottom, which had caused significant irritation.
The Healing Process
Mel’s expertise was evident as she carefully worked to remove the matting and clean the dog’s skin. The use of medicated shampoo was a necessary step in addressing the skin issues. Throughout the process, the Pomeranian, though initially nervous, began to show signs of relief.

Post-grooming, the transformation was remarkable. The Pomeranian, once hidden beneath mats and dirt, now sported a cleaner, healthier coat. Her appearance had drastically changed, and with it, her demeanor seemed to improve as well.
