Poppy is a 5-year-old black and tan piebald dachshund in Shelbyville, Tennessee, who is just beginning to discover life as a companion dog after being used as a breeder. Small at around 11 pounds with a soft wire coat and bright, curious eyes, she’s now in a new chapter—one where patience, kindness, and consistency are helping her learn what it means to be safe, loved, and part of a home.

Because most of her life was spent without typical household experiences, Poppy is still figuring things out. She is working on house training, has not yet learned leash walking, and will need guidance as she adjusts to everyday routines. But she’s smart, food-motivated, and eager to learn, which makes her progress both steady and promising.

Why Poppy Is So Special

🐾 5-year-old retired breeder dachshund
💖 Sweet, gentle, and learning to trust people
🍖 Highly food-motivated and trainable
🐶 Does well with other small, well-socialized dogs
🏡 Crate trained and beginning her journey as a pet

What She’s Looking For

✔️ A patient, experienced adopter willing to teach basic life skills
✔️ A home with a fenced yard for safe potty training and exploration
✔️ Ideally another calm, well-socialized small dog to help her learn
✔️ A home where someone is around often to help with consistency
✔️ No apartments, condos, or high-rises due to her tendency to bark

Poppy is still learning basics like leash walking and house training, so she’ll need structure, repetition, and gentle guidance. In return, she offers something incredibly meaningful—real progress, real trust, and a bond that only comes from helping a dog start over.

She is spayed, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, and maintained on monthly heartworm prevention. Her adoption fee is $450 plus a $25 microchip fee.

Poppy will need time, but she is already showing that she’s ready to become a loving companion—she just needs someone willing to show her how.

She isn’t a finished product yet, but she’s finally getting the chance to become the dog she was always meant to be.
