UPDATE: Maya has hitched a ride all the way to Boise, Idaho for her forever home! Congratulations Maya, and to everyone who shared her story – thank YOU!
Maya is a 1 year old spayed black and white female Lab mix. She originally arrived at the shelter as a stray in August 2025 and was adopted just a week later. Unfortunately, she was recently returned. Her former owner, who appeared rushed and agitated during the drop-off, stated they could no longer care for her because she repeatedly escaped their property. The recent upheaval has been very hard on Maya. She is currently terrified in the shelter environment and is receiving medical treatment for stress-induced stomach issues. To help her decompress and begin rebuilding her trust in humans, the shelter staff have recently enrolled her in their dog walking program. Because of her history, she will likely need a patient, gentle adopter and a very secure yard to help her feel safe and settled.
At first, she growls and wards off any onlookers who are curious about her. She doesn’t appear friendly and tries her best to be intimidating – but in reality, she is a sweet soul who craves attention and love. Maya simply lost trust and faith in people after being returned months later, and has become afraid to love another again. Rocky is able to scoop her and give her treats, and her walk even goes well where she shows how truly all she wants is to love without fear.
Maya is at Animal Friends of the Valleys in Wildomar, CA. Her ID is #789610. ***Please contact Animal Friends of the Valleys for out of state transport inquiries; out of state inquiries can be directed to Phil at the email facility@afv.org.
