If you have ever seen a Mal perform an obedience routine, you know firsthand what a smart and eager breed this is. Problems set in, though, when this people-oriented dog is underemployed and neglected. Exercise, and plenty of it, preferably side by side with their adored owner, is key to Mal happiness.

UPDATE (08/21/25): Bunny is currently in a foster home through the shelter. It is a ‘foster to adopt’ situation, so Bunny is safe and is likely in her forever home!

This 5 month old Belgian Malinois female puppy came into the shelter due to an owner surrender, and the reason for her surrender was heartbreaking. Animal Control was alerted to a potential cruelty/neglect situation involving multiple dogs, and when visiting the premises, they noted the dogs as underweight, underfed, and flea infested. After careful deliberation with the owner, Animal Control was able to successfully convince them to surrender the dogs for their safety. Bunny, nicknamed by Rocky due to her large ears and white fur on the tips of her feet, also came in with a calcified fraction on her front left leg, meaning it was an old injury that had been there so long it no longer caused much pain and fused, however as a precautionary after diagnostics, the shelter has her on the appropriate pain medication.

Bunny is not kenneled with the other puppies so as to not bring potential further injury to her leg (and due to her fearful behavior and needing one on one time to decompress). Potential amputation or other treatments are in her future, however for the time being, she awaits an adopter that can call her part of their family. Please be mindful if you are considering adopting Bunny that after patience, medical treatment and time for her to blossom, she is still a Belgian Malinois, meaning she will require lots of mental and physical stimulation!

***Please contact Riverside County Department of Animal Services San Jacinto campus for adoption inquiries. Adoptions are always first come, first serve. Pets must be visited with in person prior to an adoption. Rocky Kanaka is not responsible for adoption processes and interested parties must go through the shelter for more details on adopting.***
