Big Boy is a senior dog, approximately 7-9 years old. He came to Castaways after being found stranded on the side of the road. He was dehydrated, hungry, and in desperate need of help. Big Boy has really been through the ringer. He has had countless infections, he was suspected of having heartworm disease, and has been the vet more times than we can count.

Through repeated vet visits, it was discovered that he had a mass on his heart. He has ongoing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and constant panting which are consistent with a heart condition, however we cannot determine a specific prognosis (such as mass type or life expectancy) without sending him to a cardiologist which is too costly for the rescue at this time. Due to his medical condition, Big Boy is now considered a hospice case.

Big Boy gets along great with kids, and he loves the lady dogs. He would make a wonderful companion dog because he loves to be with and around people. Big Boy is not one of these dogs that constantly needs attention from his owner. All he needs is to be in his owner’s presence and his heart is happy, just be prepared for him to follow you wherever you go!

Big Boy does not adapt quickly to change: loss of appetite, issues with going to the bathroom, and a potential hunger strike are normal for him during any type of transition. He does not do well in a crate and needs a slow feeder when eating (or he will not keep his food down). He is dog selective and does not do well around cats.
