Mikey, a 3-year-old terrier/poodle mix weighing 13 pounds, found himself in a dire situation at a kill shelter, facing imminent euthanasia. His arrival at the shelter on March 16, 2024, was marked by injuries likely from a car accident, leaving him with a dangling back left leg and scabbed injuries on his head and shoulder. Despite his physical pain and the bleak environment of the shelter, Mikey remained affectionate and loving. For a week, he languished in the shelter without any prospects for adoption or medical treatment beyond basic pain management.
Then, Laura Engel, a dedicated foster, stepped in, compelled by a special connection she felt with Mikey. Upon rescue, Mikey’s condition was addressed immediately. Despite his messy appearance, marked by a stinky coat, blue paint, and tar-like substances, his foster managed to clean him up, preparing him for necessary medical evaluation and surgery. An orthopedic surgeon in Tustin, CA, diagnosed him with a femur fracture but was optimistic about the surgery’s success. The substantial cost of Mikey’s medical care, totaling $7,700, posed a challenge for Lovebugs Rescue, a donation-based organization run by volunteers. They appealed to the community for support through various donation channels, underscoring the collective effort required to rehabilitate Mikey and prepare him for a brighter future.
