#1 Dog Adoption Myth Debunked: You Can’t Find Puppies At Shelters.
“I considered adopting a dog, but I wanted a puppy, so I went with a breeder instead.” Folks working and volunteering in animal rescue hear comments like this all the time. Many people believe that shelters only have adult dogs and no puppies, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Shelters and animal rescues have puppies available for foster and adoption all the time, and you don’t need to buy from a breeder to raise a dog from puppyhood.
Adoptable Puppies Who Need Homes
Animal shelters are constantly receiving new dogs as strays and owner surrenders. Among the adult and senior dogs that find themselves in shelters, there are also plenty of puppies. Benton-Franklin Humane Society in Kennewick, Washington, for example, currently has more than a dozen young puppies available for adoption, and at least a dozen more young adults who are still puppies in their own right.
To give you an example of the wide range of puppies you might find if you start looking at local shelters and animal rescue, let’s meet some of Benton-Franklin Humane Society’s adoptable pups.
