How This Lurcher Dog Reacts to Donut Theft Accusations Is The Sweetest Thing You’ll See All Day

A few things are as entertaining as seeing dogs feigning innocence after being caught red-pawed stealing. If you’re in need of a good laugh today, allow us to present to you the most elegant-looking furry thief you’ll perhaps ever come across: Steven, a Lurcher dog found guilty of stealing a donut by his owner.

In the hilarious clip posted to TikTok by Steven’s owner @steventhetalkinglurcher, Steven can be seen lying on the couch with guilt plastered all over his face as his owner playfully confronts him about stealing a donut. Things take an even funnier turn when the owner asks her cute thieving pup to sing in order to “clear” his name. A guilty Steven howls for a few seconds, as though singing out his apology song. Lucky for him, he’s instantly forgiven for the laughable petty crime.

About the Lurcher Dog Breed: History

The Lurcher dog breed — more popular in the U.K. and Ireland than in other countries — is a designer dog breed with deep British roots. Lurcher dogs were originally bred in the U.K., where they were considered valuable companions for hunters and poachers.

This fascinating dog breed is an outcome of the cross-breeding of purebred sighthound breeds like Greyhounds with non-sighthounds such as Terriers and Collies. Only the noble in the British society, and not commoners, were allowed to own Greyhounds and other purebred sighthounds. This drove the development of the Lurcher dog to serve as a hunting and poaching companion for ordinary people.

Lurchers were prized for their speed, athleticism, stealth, and intelligence, traits that they inherited from their Sight hound ancestors. Over time, hunters and poachers fell in love with the Lurcher for its family-oriented personality, increasing this breed’s popularity in the U.K. as a versatile canine companion. Today, the Lurcher is one of the most cherished dog breeds in Irish and British homes.

Although Lurchers aren’t as common in the U.S., their popularity is slowly increasing due to their potential as incredible family dogs. It’s worth pointing out that the Lurcher dog isn’t officially recognized by the American Kennel Club, since it is a mixed breed.

Lifespan, Temperament & Physical Traits of the Lurcher Dog

According to the American Lurcher Project (ALP), Lurchers are affectionate, people-friendly, and loyal dogs with a sense of humor and an ability to form strong bonds with their humans in no time.

Even though the Lurcher breed is active at heart, they also have a couch potato side to them, as is the case with Greyhounds and other sighthounds. Lurcher dogs tend to get along with kids because of their social and playful nature, making them ideal for homes with children. Unfortunately, they’re not the best dogs for homes with smaller pets like cats due to their strong prey drive; they’ll chase these pets around.

“They need some sort of high-speed off-lead exercise and then snooze on your bed or sofa for the rest of the day. Generally have quite a high prey drive….he’ll go after rabbits/squirrels/birds. Fantastic with children and loves cuddles,” wrote user @No-cranberry 4396 in a Reddit discussion post on Lurchers.

“Pros to having a Lurcher (we have a two-and-a-half year old rescue): couch potatoes really 95% of the time, don’t need much walking (maybe one run a day, at most two light walks), very funny dogs, ours gets on well with other dogs, people, and kids,” commented another user @Nervous-Ad1480.

Lurchers are known to have a strong resemblance to purebred sighthounds —  a sleek, athletic body, deep chest, long legs, pointed snouts, and a short coat (which can come in various colors). However, it’s not unusual for a Lurcher to have a dense coat, particularly if the sighthound was cross-bred with a long-coated, non-sighthound breed. In other words, the Lurcher hunting dog can either be a short-haired Lurcher or a long-haired Lurcher.

Lurchers reach heights of between 22–28 inches on average and weigh between 60–70 pounds. These amazing hunting dogs have an average life expectancy of 12–15 years.

Health Issues Affecting the Lurcher Dog Breed

Just like other dog breeds, Lurchers are susceptible to certain health problems during the course of their lifetime. Some of the common health issues that this running dog is prone to include:

  • Osteosarcoma (a form of bone cancer)
  • Gastric Dilation and Volvulus
  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Dilated Cardiomyopathy
  • Muscle and Toe injuries
  • Heat stroke

Where to Find Lurcher Dogs for Adoption

If you’re entertaining the thought of adding a Lurcher to your family, consider going through the adoption route instead of purchasing. The good news is, you can easily find Lurchers for adoption through various reputable rescue organizations in the U.S. for instance, the American Rescue Lurcher Project and A Place for Us Greyhounds Rescue & Adoption
