Urgent Plea to Adopt This Treasured Chihuahua Twosome After Golden Years Derailed

Ren and Stempy are two adorable senior Chihuahua mixes currently in the care of Woofs, Wiggles n Wags animal rescue in Phoenix, Arizona. At nine years old, these boys may be entering their golden years, but they have tons of love left to give! Staff describes Ren and Stempy as “very friendly,” good with other pets, and good with kids. They sort of sound like a dream pair, don’t they?

So, why on earth did this bonded pair end up in a shelter looking for a forever home?

Necessary Surrender: When Dog Owners Have No Other Choice

No one wants to have to give up their pets, much less surrender them to an animal shelter. For many of us, the idea of needing to leave our pets at a rescue to find a new home would be a true nightmare. Unfortunately, many people are forced to make this incomprehensible decision, particularly when our lives change drastically.

Ren and Stempy’s original owner loved them very much. Sadly, their human had to move to an assisted living facility where pets weren’t allowed. Luckily, Ren and Stempy were surrendered to a qualified team of rescuers—many animals in this position are abandoned or dumped, particularly if the original owner doesn’t have a support system.

Sadly, many people simply have no other option but to surrender or give up their pets when they can no longer care for them. In most cases, people don’t even know they have other options and are just doing the best they know how to do for their pets. That said, there is another option!

Estate & Succession Planning for Your Pets

Their Golden Years Derailed: An Urgent Plea to Adopt This Treasured Chihuahua Twosome

Just like you can create an estate plan for your financial assets, home, or possessions, you can create an estate plan or a succession plan for your dog

Succession planning for your pet establishes who will care for the dog in the event that you are unable to. These plans can outline your wishes for your pet if you are indisposed, and can protect your pet from being surrendered or euthanized without your approval. In some cases, pet owners may allocate financial resources for the dog, leaving money for their care and ensuring they live a happy life, even if their human is gone.

Sadly, sudden illness or death can leave pets without a human to advocate for them. Overwhelmed families and friends may make decisions the pet owner would not make if they have no guidance on handling their late loved one’s pet. Leaving a succession plan is like creating a safety net for your pet, even if you can’t be there to care for them yourself.

Why You Should Consider Adopting Senior Dogs

Do Ren and Stempy make your heart go pitter-patter? This adorable bonded pair can be sent to adopters anywhere in the country, so you don’t need to be near Woofs, Wiggles n Wags to adopt!

If you’ve never considered adopting a senior dog before, let me tell you a few of the perks:

  • Senior dogs are content to chill most of the time—if you need a couch buddy, a senior pup will happily loaf all day!
  • Senior dogs have lots of experience and don’t need to be taught how to move through the world. Most seniors already know how to sit, walk on a leash, use stairs, potty outside, etc. No training for you!
  • Senior dogs have so much love to give! Many senior dogs have lost their humans, and are ready to show another human just how much they appreciate them.

Ren and Stempy are currently available for adoption and in the care of Woofs, Wiggles n Wags animal rescue in Phoenix, Arizona.
