Sweet Dog Waited at the Shelter Door for Her Family to Return—But They Never Even Called Back
About a month ago, Penelope — a 2-year-old Pitbull Terrier Mix — was brought to the Humane Society of Broward County after she was found wandering the streets, looking lost and confused. (Watch Video Below)
@humanebroward They never came 🥺💔 Sweet 2-year-old Penelope was found as a stray, and even though she is microchipped, her family sadly never came for her 😔 Now she’s been living in a shelter for a month wondering why? 🥺 This beautiful girl is very sweet and loving ❤️ She walks calmly on a leash, she doesn’t react to other dogs and she appears to be housetrained. Penelope is affectionate, likes to be petted and even knows to sit nicely ☺️ She plays with toys, loves to play fetch with the ball and is very interactive. She has such a great energy, all she needs is a forever family to share it with ❤️ If you can’t adopt, please share for Penelope 🙏 To adopt Penelope, please fill out a pre-adoption application at www.humanebroward.com and come to the shelter to meet her. The shelter is located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, FL and opens daily at 11 a.m. If you have any questions, please call 954-989-3977 ext. 6. #rescuedog #shelterdog #adoptme #adoptdontshop #doglover #fortlauderdale #florida #dogvideos #video #bulldogs #doglife #staffy #dogs #dogoftheday #dogsoftiktok #dogshelter #animalshelter #fyp #foryou #foryoupage #staffylove #dog #bulldog #bullybreed #bullylove #pittiesoftiktok #pitbull #pittie #dogtok #bulldogsoftiktok ♬ original sound – Humane Society Broward County
At first, the shelter thought they’d just picked up another random stray who had never tasted the comfort of a real home. But once they scanned Penelope and discovered her microchip, they sighed in relief, convinced that her family would drop everything to come and get their precious girl. Everyone at the shelter was sure that Penelope would be reunited with her family that very same day she came to the shelter. After all, who would even think of leaving behind this perfect girl?
Sadly, Penelope’s family never came to get her.
Despite making numerous calls and leaving countless voicemails, the shelter never heard from them. Penelope’s family didn’t bother to even call back and offer an explanation, let alone drive to the shelter to reunite with her.
Penelope went from being a happy family dog to a heartbroken shelter resident, and, honestly, it’s painful to accept that the family she adored endlessly betrayed her in such a heart-wrenching manner.
No Flaws, Just a Perfect Dog

What’s more saddening about Penelope’s situation is that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this lovely Pittie. She’s perfect in every way; the kind of dream dog that can make you feel you’ve won the furry jackpot. Penelope is too sweet, too gentle, too kind-hearted, too gorgeous, too affectionate, too fun-loving…..basically, too everything.
Penelope is house-trained, walks great on the leash, and isn’t reactive toward other dogs. She has no negative behaviors she’s working on, only good manners. Penelope’s a total package, yet she was ignored and forgotten by the family that once promised her forever.
As she sits quietly in the corner of her kennel, Penelope can’t stop wishing for someone to choose her. This brindle-coated pup is patiently waiting for another chance — a chance to be part of a loving forever family that will stick by her side, come rain or shine, because that’s exactly what she promises to reciprocate as well.
Please Give Penelope a Home

It’s hard to believe that a dog as amazing as Penelope still doesn’t have a family to call her own. Or is it because her worst offense is demanding to be petted whenever she’s around people?
Besides her love for pets, Penelope is an active pup who believes game of fetch is the greatest invention in existence. If you ask us, we’d tell you that Penelope’s heart is powered by sunshine and playful vibes — she just has a way of making your day feel brighter and more fun without trying so hard. And the best part is, her energy isn’t overwhelming; it’s contagious.
Penelope may not understand why she’s still at the shelter, but she can feel it in her bones that this isn’t where she belongs. If you’d love to adopt Penelope, learn more here.
