Petition: Stop Routine Euthanasia of Healthy Greyhounds

A startling revelation has shaken Victoria’s greyhound racing industry: healthy, young dogs are being euthanized without efforts to treat or rehome them. The disturbing practice came to light after an email, intended for a greyhound trainer, was mistakenly sent to a rescue group.

This email exposes a pattern in which greyhounds, often with minor or unconfirmed injuries, are euthanized simply because they are deemed financially unviable. One such case involved a 12-month-old greyhound suspected of having a fracture; the dog was put down without x-rays or medical intervention, despite the injury being unconfirmed.

This incident is not isolated. Investigations by the Victorian Racing Tribunal reveal a troubling pattern where greyhounds with treatable conditions are euthanized with no attempt to rehome them. Greyhound Racing Victoria’s annual reports have been criticized for obscuring the specifics of these cases, masking the routine disposal of healthy dogs as standard industry practice.

Animal advocates are calling for transparency, urging the Victorian parliament to support the Animal Justice Party’s motion requiring Greyhound Racing Victoria to disclose detailed reasons for each off-track death.

Sign the petition to demand parliament pass the motion to force Greyhound Racing Victoria to be more transparent and accountable, saving greyhounds lives in the process.
