Pittie Mix Overlooked At Shelter For Half His Life Gets One Last Shot At Finding a Home
Some shelter dogs can spend weeks, months, and even years being overlooked and waiting for even one adoption application. While some dogs adapt relatively well to a shelter environment, even the most well-adjusted dog will become emotionally fatigued after months in a kennel.
Calvin, a 4-year-old Pitbull Boxer mix, has spent more than half his life in a shelter. Shelter life is stressful, and it can be hard for even the most outgoing dog to show their personality fully to potential adopters. Like many Pitbull mixes, Calvin was overlooked, and no one applied to adopt him for almost three years.
Calvin was being cared for by a small New York shelter, and staff were at a loss for why no one wanted this sweet boy. Calvin was gentle and affectionate, but no adopters saw his potential. Something had to change, and the decision was made to relocate Calvin to a more relaxed environment. This is where Calvin’s emotional and psychological glow-up began.
Shelter Dog Gets Time To Decompress Before Training Camp
Calvin was transferred to Bubbles Dog Rescue, a California-based private rescue that fosters dogs that are either on the euthanasia list or are long-term shelter residents at risk of losing hope for an adopter. Bubbles Dog Rescue found Calvin a foster in Rialto, California, and this sweet dog finally got a chance to decompress. Calvin had spent years in a kennel, and life in his foster home was a welcome respite from the stress of a shelter.
Once Calvin felt more comfortable and confident, Bubbles Dog Rescue found a place for him in a board and train program where he could learn obedience and basic training. Potential adopters pass over many Pitbull mixes because of behavioral concerns. Sending Calvin to a board and train would give him a leg up, and make him more “adoptable,” so to speak.
Many people incorrectly believe that an untrained Pitbull will be more difficult to manage than an untrained dog of another breed. The truth about Pitbulls is that they are loving, social, playful dogs, and it would be wrong—and impossible—to judge an individual Pitbull’s personality based on breed alone.
Calvin Deserves a Forever Home—How To Adopt
Now that Calvin is trained, acclimated to life in a home, and de-stressed from his time in a shelter, he is more than ready for a forever home.
“Calvin is a sweet, affectionate, goofy, active boy. He is amazing at agility, is super fun and adorable, and is so easy to walk,” says Calvin’s foster family. “He really, really enjoys being around humans, but needs to have an alpha in the house that is not him!”
Calvin loves other dogs and does well with canines big and small, but he is not tested with cats. Calvin loves all the adults he has met, but would probably do best in a home without young children. His ideal forever human would have some experience with obedience so that they can help Calvin retain his training. Calvin likes to be active and is great at agility, so a home that can give him that enrichment would be ideal.
Calvin is currently in Rialto, California, but he can be transported anywhere for the right forever family! Fill out an application to adopt Calvin through Bubbles Dog Rescue—he is ready to be your best friend!
