Young Dog Suffered for Months Before Losing Her Leg—Petition Demands Lifetime Animal Ban
A one-year-old Australian Shepherd-Collie mix named Rosie is recovering after veterinarians were forced to amputate one of her legs following what authorities describe as months without proper veterinary care.
According to the Potsdam Humane Society, Rosie suffered a severe leg injury after it reportedly became caught in a sawmill belt sometime in April. Shelter officials say she allegedly went more than two months without receiving the medical treatment she desperately needed.
Now, a petition is calling for a lifetime animal ownership ban and mandatory mental health counseling if the owner is convicted.

A Horrific Injury That Reportedly Went Untreated
According to Victoria Murray, manager of the Potsdam Humane Society, multiple people became concerned about Rosie’s condition and reported it to animal control.
Murray said an animal control officer visited the owner’s property in Hopkinton, New York, on two occasions after receiving complaints. She said the owner allegedly refused to allow the officer to examine the dog.
Only after reportedly being informed that an animal cruelty conviction could carry jail time and a fine was Rosie surrendered to authorities.
When Murray finally saw the young dog, she described being overcome with emotion.
“I cried and then I got angry,” she said.
Rosie was immediately transported to Silver Birch Animal Hospital, where veterinarians determined her injured leg could not be saved. It had to be amputated.

Rosie Gets a Second Chance
Despite everything she endured, Rosie survived.
Community members quickly rallied around the young dog after the Potsdam Humane Society shared her story online. Donations totaling approximately $4,000 helped cover the cost of her surgery and recovery.
According to the shelter, Rosie is recovering well and has already received numerous adoption applications from families hoping to give her the loving home she deserves.
Shelter manager Victoria Murray described Rosie simply:
“She’s very sweet. She just wants love.”
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office has opened an animal cruelty investigation.
According to Murray, the owner reportedly told animal control that a veterinarian had examined Rosie and determined the injury was not life-threatening. Murray also said the owner reportedly planned to breed Rosie before eventually euthanizing her.
As of the latest reports, no arrest has been made, and sheriff’s deputies say the investigation remains ongoing.
No Animal Should Endure Months of Pain
For many animal advocates, Rosie’s case highlights the devastating consequences that can result when an injured animal is allegedly left without medical care.
Thanks to the intervention of animal control officers, shelter staff, veterinarians, and generous donors, Rosie now has a future.
But supporters of the petition believe future animals deserve protection before they suffer similar injuries.
They are urging prosecutors and the court to pursue a lifetime animal ownership ban and mandatory mental health counseling if a conviction is obtained.
