Over 50 Animals Rescued From Neglect—Now the Public Demands Justice
In a disturbing case of animal neglect in Cobleskill, New York, 52 animals—including dogs, cats, birds, and livestock—were rescued from horrifying conditions inside a private home. While some survivors have begun their recovery at the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, others were not as lucky—several animals were found dead on the property.
Now, animal advocates and citizens alike are demanding accountability. Sign the petition to enforce a lifetime ban on animal ownership for those responsible for this cruelty.
A Shocking Discovery

The nightmare began with a tip to local authorities, prompting a multi-agency rescue operation that lasted over eight hours. Staff from the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, New York State Police, and the County Sheriff’s Office worked together to remove every living creature from the squalid environment.
“We have nine dogs, sixteen cats, two ferrets, two parakeets, two cockatiels, one rabbit, and the rest are hens and roosters,” said Aprille Hadsell, the shelter’s Veterinary Medical Director. “The conditions were such that we could not leave a single animal behind.”
What rescuers found was heartbreaking. Animals were severely flea-infested, malnourished, and terrified of human contact. Some had nails so overgrown they could barely walk. Others had clearly been neglected for weeks—if not months.
And tragically, not all the animals survived. Their bodies were discovered alongside their surviving companions, a painful reminder of just how urgent the intervention was.

Faces of Survival

Despite the trauma they endured, many of the rescued animals are beginning to show signs of hope.
A kitten named Skunky was spotted playing gently in the arms of a staff member. Ivory, a frightened dog, still found the courage to seek affection from her rescuers. Even a hen—rescued from filthy, overcrowded conditions—showed a surprising willingness to engage with shelter workers.
But others will need time, patience, and specialized care to recover. “We’ve got animals that are going to require some substantial work and socialization because they just want nothing to do with the human hand touching them,” Hadsell added.
The shelter, which typically doesn’t house this many species at once, is now overwhelmed—caring for 52 traumatized animals who all require veterinary attention, rehabilitation, and new homes.
You can help by signing the petition to demand a lifetime ban on animal ownership for the individuals responsible for this cruelty.
A Call for Justice—and Prevention

This was not an isolated incident. Cases of severe neglect and abuse continue to emerge across the country, and too often, perpetrators face minimal consequences. That’s why it’s critical that we send a strong message now: those who subject animals to such cruelty should never be allowed to do so again.
Executive Director Maggie Jackman Pryor is urging the public to speak up when they suspect abuse. “I know sometimes people think their voices go unheard—but they don’t,” she said. “We are trying to form a task force to really address this in Schoharie County.”
Community members, advocates, and animal lovers from across the country are uniting in one demand: that the individuals behind this atrocity be permanently banned from owning or keeping any animals. Ever.
This case is a stark reminder that animal cruelty is not just heartbreaking—it’s preventable. With stronger laws, consistent enforcement, and public accountability, we can stop the cycle.
