He Threw His Puppy From Porch and Strangled Her — Now Public Demands Justice
In a deeply disturbing case out of Hibbing, Minnesota, a 35-year-old man has been charged with multiple counts of animal abuse after witnesses reported that he broke both of his puppy’s legs, strangled her, and repeatedly threw her from a back porch.

The suspect, identified as Trevor Ross, is now facing two criminal charges: one count of Overwork/Mistreat Animals—Torture, and one count of Overwork/Mistreat Animals—Deprive of Food/Shelter. If convicted, Ross could face up to two years in prison and a $5,000 fine for the torture charge, and an additional 90 days and $1,000 for the deprivation charge.

But for those who witnessed the suffering firsthand, no sentence seems harsh enough.
A Pattern of Sadistic Abuse
Ross had recently acquired a female Great Dane/Mastiff puppy. According to witness reports and court documents, the abuse started almost immediately.
One of the first people to see the dog said she already had a broken leg — an injury Ross admitted to causing himself. But it didn’t stop there. Ross reportedly developed a sickening pattern: he would throw the helpless puppy off his back porch, then wrap her in a cushion to muffle her cries before hurling her inside the house again.
In one instance, Ross allegedly assaulted the dog in front of a young child. Witnesses told police that after the puppy urinated in the wrong spot, Ross picked her up and threw her across the room. When she peed again in the kitchen, he pinned her down on the floor and strangled her.
When officers visited the home on April 2 with Ross’s probation officer, they found the puppy barely able to move. Lying on a foam pad, her ribs and spine were visible through her skin — a clear sign of starvation. Ross claimed the dog had injured herself weeks earlier, but couldn’t explain why she was so emaciated or why she struggled to walk.
As officers approached, the puppy tried to get up. She clearly wanted to come to them — but physically couldn’t. Her body was too broken.
Veterinarians who examined her confirmed that she had two leg fractures, a head contusion, intervertebral disc disease, and was severely malnourished. The vet team noted that with proper care and nutrition, she may still be able to recover and live a happy life.
A Chance for Justice

Ross was arrested on April 4 and booked into the St. Louis County Jail. His first court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, April 10. Hibbing Police Chief Steven Estey confirmed that the dog is showing signs of improvement and that they hope to place her in a loving, permanent home when she is fully recovered.
But animal advocates nationwide are demanding more than just a court appearance — they want lasting protection for animals.
Sign the Petition to ensure this man is permanently banned from owning, caring for, or working with animals. This wasn’t a one-time outburst. It was a calculated, repeated pattern of abuse — and there must be consequences.
Why It Matters
The cruelty described in this case is more than heartbreaking — it’s enraging. It’s a reminder that dogs have no voice unless we speak up for them. Animals who suffer at the hands of abusers often don’t get second chances. This puppy was lucky someone reported what they saw. But countless others are not.
That’s why it’s crucial that we push for real consequences in cases like these — not just a slap on the wrist. Animal torture should never be minimized or overlooked.
Let Ross’s story be a turning point. Let it show that communities care. That animal cruelty is a serious crime. That dogs deserve justice.
