Dead Dog Found Decomposing in Crate as Starving Animals Rescued From Florida Farm—Petition Demands Lifetime Animal Ban
Authorities in Martin County, Florida, say they uncovered a scene of extreme animal suffering after receiving an anonymous tip about possible neglect on a rural farm near Port Mayaca.
Investigators reported finding a decomposing dog locked inside a crate, a severely emaciated shepherd too weak to crawl out from beneath a tractor, puppies covered in fleas and open sores, and multiple other animals in desperate need of care.
Now, a petition is calling for a lifetime ban on animal ownership and working with animals if the accused is convicted.

An Anonymous Tip Saved Lives
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies launched an investigation after someone reported possible animal abuse taking place on the property.
What they found was heartbreaking.
Inside a crate, investigators discovered the decomposed remains of a dog. According to authorities, the crate contained bowls filled with sand, and investigators reported finding no signs that the animal had been properly cared for.
Elsewhere on the property, deputies found a shepherd hiding beneath a tractor. Sheriff John Budensiek said the dog was so severely dehydrated and malnourished that it could not come out on its own as animal control officers attempted to rescue it.
Authorities also located a female dog named Gorda with her three puppies. Investigators said the puppies were covered in fleas and had open sores and wounds. A pregnant cat was also found on the property.

Rescue Came Just in Time
Sheriff Budensiek credited the anonymous tipsters with saving the surviving animals’ lives.
“They were the angels out there for these animals,” he said, explaining that the rescue allowed authorities to get the animals to safety before more lives were lost.
The surviving animals were removed from the property and taken to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, where they are receiving veterinary care and beginning their recovery.
For some, that rescue likely came just in time.
According to investigators, the shepherd found beneath the tractor appeared to be in severe pain and had no nearby food or water. Officials believe additional animals may not have survived much longer had authorities not intervened.
Arrest Made After Investigation
Following the rescue, deputies continued investigating to identify the person responsible.
Authorities arrested 34-year-old John Arreaga of Okeechobee on animal cruelty charges in connection with the case.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Arreaga was later released after posting a $12,500 bond while the criminal case proceeds.
The investigation remains focused on the conditions in which the animals were allegedly kept and whether additional accountability is warranted.
These Animals Deserved Better
Few animal cruelty cases illustrate neglect more starkly than this one.
One dog reportedly died alone inside a crate before help arrived. Another was so weak from starvation and dehydration that rescuers said it could not crawl to safety. Puppies were allegedly left with untreated wounds while fleas covered their tiny bodies.
Thanks to an anonymous caller, those animals who survived now have a chance to heal.
But animal advocates say rescue should not be the final chapter.
Supporters of the petition are urging authorities to pursue a lifetime ban on animal ownership and working with animals if a conviction is obtained, arguing that preventing future suffering is just as important as responding after it occurs.
