It’s A Regal Beagle– Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Adopt

In July 2022, almost 4,000 beagles were rescued by animal welfare officers from the Envigo breeding and research facility in Virginia. The seizure of the dogs came following a series of alarming discoveries by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which reported numerous Animal Welfare Act violations including unsafe living conditions, malnourishment and dehydration, and inhumane medical and testing practices.

After being removed from the facility, the thousands of beagles were turned over to the nonprofit Humane Society of the United States, where they began their rehabilitation journey. Now scattered across the country in the care of rescues, fosters, and adoptive homes, many of the beagles have shown incredible improvement and will live beautiful, happy lives.

Of these 4,000 beagles, Mama Mia might have one of the biggest transformations of all. Once abused and used for unethical breeding, Mama Mia is now living her best life as a royal.

Adopted in California, Mama Mia’s new family is none other than Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Touched by the story of these abused and neglected dogs, Meghan contacted the California rescue directly to inquire about adopting one of the beagles. According to the adoption officials, Meghan was incredibly gracious and excited to bring Mama Mia home.

Mama Mia is just one of the many beagles who have been forcibly bred, and of the 4,000 beagles ceased from Envigo, many were pregnant.

Older dogs, and especially those who have been used for breeding can have an incredibly difficult time finding an adoptive home. Luckily for Miss Mama Mia, a life of leisure was ready and waiting.

Many of these beagles are still available for adoption, so be sure to reach out to your local Humane Society for more information on adding an Envigo beagle to your family, just like Harry and Meghan!
