According to police reports, Sweetpea was wrapped in a blanket and then mercilessly kicked, stomped, and slammed into the ground by a man named Eric Ivan Roldan. The tiny puppy, weighing just 10 pounds, sustained brutal injuries to her head, nose, ears, and skull.

Sweetpea’s Rescue and Fight to Survive
Officers with the Live Oak Police Department were called to a residence after a woman—Sweetpea’s owner—called in an emergency report of abuse. When officers arrived, they found her holding the tiny puppy in her arms. Sweetpea’s body was battered and broken. Blood streamed from her nose and ears, her eyes were swollen shut, and her ears were riddled with cuts.
Police rushed Sweetpea and her caregiver to a veterinarian, where she was found to have severe swelling around her head and a fractured skull. Veterinarians noted she was in “obvious physical distress,” and it was unclear at the time whether she would survive.
Her abuser, Eric Ivan Roldan, was arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty.
