Obsession with purebred dogs!

At the shelter, they learn that many purebred dogs come from puppy mills, which are commercial dog breeding operations that prioritize profit over the health and happiness of the animals. Jacob is dismissive of this idea and insists on going to the pet store to look for a purebred dog. When they arrive, they find that the prices have gone up and they can not afford to purchase a puppy. Insisting on buying one of those puppies, Jacob’s mom asks him to go home and talk to his dad and if they could make it work financially, then they will be back the next day to purchase one.

Disappointment turns into a lesson: Puppy mills and the issues surrounding them

Disappointed, they leave the pet store and go back to the shelter. Jacob is still insistent on getting a purebred dog and is upset when his mom suggests they try the shelter again. However, they soon come across the same litter of puppies they had seen in the pet store that was given to the shelter because of going out of business. The puppies are purebred but also very sick due to being bred in a puppy mill. Jacob is heartbroken when he is told that they cannot adopt one of the sick puppies.
