Dumped While Pregnant, This Sweet Mama Dog Has Been Overlooked for 5 Years Without a Single Application
Joy, a deaf five-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier, has been waiting for a home for five long years. Despite being sweet, playful, and a loving mama dog, Joy has never had a single adoption application or even a meet-and-greet.

Her journey hasn’t been easy. In 2019, Joy was abandoned at a kill shelter while heavily pregnant. She gave birth shortly after and did an incredible job caring for her puppies until they were adopted. Once her puppies found homes, Joy was transferred to Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary in Kansas, where she’s been waiting ever since.
It’s hard for the staff and volunteers to understand why such a kind and affectionate dog has been overlooked for so long. Joy’s sweet personality and resilience make her unforgettable to everyone who meets her — but sadly, her forever family still hasn’t found her.
@abby.loucks meet Joy! the link to apply is in my bio! we do adopt out of state and have adopted as far as Canada! #rescuedog #adoptabledogs #dogsinneed #adoptdontshop #kansascity #longtermshelterdog #shelterdogs @Always & Furever ❤️🐾 ♬ Lights Are On – Tom Rosenthal
A Joy to Be Around
Ask any staff or volunteer to describe Joy in a few words, and they’ll tell you almost something similar: she’s a joy to be around, just as her name implies. It’s for this reason that they’re having a hard time understanding why no one wants to give this gorgeous mama dog a chance.
Joy certainly doesn’t deserve to feel like she is unworthy of love. Even as she continues to desperately wait for the right pair of eyes to notice her, Joy still exhibits the sweetest demeanor to those around her, her hearing impairment notwithstanding.
Could You Be Joy’s Forever Person?
The rescue describes Joy as the kindest girl who just wants somebody to love on her for the rest of her life. She’s a pro at suffocating her humans with affection and is an absolute entertainer, thanks to her playful antics. Joy’s favorite things to do include going on car rides, flopping down for belly rubs after walks, and defluffing stuffed toys in seconds (if we’re being honest, this is her top favorite thing to do).
Despite having a hearing impairment, Joy has mastered signs for “I love you,” “good girl,” “sit,” “no,” “leave it,” “peanut butter,” “walk,” “drink,” and “eat.” Did we mention she’s also crate trained, housebroken, and displays excellent leash-walking skills? Joy is kinda selective about the four-legged friends she wants to hang around with — she prefers dogs who are big like her, not the small ones. Plus, she’s not a fan of cats.
If you’d love to offer Joy the forever home she’s been craving all these years, learn more.
