There’s nothing more fun than traveling with your pooch! Whether you’re romping at a beach or hiking, everything’s better with your best friend, especially if your dog is the best dog for travel!

Meet Jonathan!

Before Jonathan’s mom found him, this poor pooch was on the shelter’s euthanasia list! Fortunately for him, Amanda spotted him in time! After being adopted from a shelter in Connecticut, this soon-to-be-globetrotter stole his mom’s heart with his laid back attitude and curious personality.

While Jonathan’s first few trips were strictly domestic, he quickly gained his wings. Since his adoption, this little dog has hit up glamorous locations like Paris, Cinque Terre, and Venice! You can stay up to date on all of his adventures on his Instagram page, @jonathanwarrenofficial.

The Best Dogs for Travel

You know you made it when you arrive in Paris!

While globetrotting may not be on everyone’s itinerary, there are plenty of ways to travel with your dog. There are also plenty of dogs to travel with, but some breeds are better passengers than others.

While we are huge fans of big dogs they didn’t make this particular list because it requires a dog to fly on a plane. If there were an article about best dogs for camping, or best dogs for a road trip, you would see big dogs listed here. Smaller dogs are ideal because they may be able to travel with you, in a carrier, by your feet.

1. Dachshund

Dachshunds are great dogs to travel with

One of the best breeds to travel with is the long and strong weiner dog. Their small size and compact stature makes them perfect travel companions. Dachshunds also fit well into small pet carriers, which means that you can easily bring them on your flight as carry-on!

2. Russell Terrier

Jack Russell terriers are small enough to travel, and have lots of energy. One of the best dogs for travel

You don’t know Jack until you’ve traveled with him! Like dachshunds, Russell terriers are the perfect size to qualify as carry-on luggage during plane trips. This is a breed known for its stubbornness, though, so be sure to do some training before you travel.

3. Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are one of the best dogs for travel because they are very small and easily portable

Another stubborn entry is the iconic chihuahua. You’ll need to put some effort into training this excitable little dog, but they make for amazing travel buddies! (Jonathon is a chihuahua) Like dachshunds and terriers, they can easily fit into carry-on crates should you ever take them on a flight.

4. Yorkshire Terrier

Even smaller than its Russell relatives, the Yorkie is made for travel. These little dogs have a big personality, but a well-trained and tired out Yorkie will readily adapt to the longest of journeys.

5. Maltese, Shih tzu, Bichon Frise

Maltese are hypoallergenic and small so they make our list of the best dogs for travel

All of these small fluffy breeds make excellent traveling companions. After all, they are specifically bred to be companion dogs, and most of them take their jobs quite seriously. Most of them would love the idea of sitting in your lap for hours at a time. Plus, these dogs are hypoallergenic, so not likely they will make fellow passengers sneeze.
