Australian Shepherd Dog Rescued from the Streets of Afghanistan Ready to be Part of a Forever Family
Each dog residing at an animal shelter or rescue has their own story of how they ended up there. But what many don’t know is that some of these dogs had to travel thousands of miles from their home countries to start life afresh in the United States.
Among these beautiful, resilient furry souls lucky to have found a chance at a better life away from her native home is Ziva, a 2-year-old Australian Shepherd with the most jovial personality.
Ziva is currently a resident at All Shepherd Rescue in Baltimore, Maryland. Beneath her bubbly personality is a dog whose past life experiences were anything but joyful, going by the fact her home country was marred by decades of war and conflict. Found in the streets of Afghanistan as a stray, Ziva owes her new beginnings to one particular non-profit animal rescue and veterinary clinic in the heart of Kabul, Afghanistan: the Kabul Small Animal Rescue (KSAR).
KSAR — dedicated to rescuing strays and helping them find adoptive homes outside of Afghanistan — was able to raise enough funds to facilitate a chartered flight to the U.S. for Ziva and dozens of other dogs and cats.
Despite all the unimaginable hardships she endured back in her war-zoned native home, Ziva has put her past behind her, as evident from her lively personality that stuns anyone who interacts with her. Staff at the All Shepherds Rescue describe her as a “happy, social pup,” a stark contrast to the shy dog she was when she first arrived at the rescue.
Opening your heart and home to Ziva is pretty much saying yes to a dog who will spend the rest of her life thanking you for showing her what it means to be a treasured canine family member. Ziva is great with dogs, and the rescue says she’d do well in a home with older kids.
If you’d love to shower this 50-pound furry beauty with a lifetime of love and a good, comfortable life, just as she deserves, kindly visit the All Shepherd Rescue’s website for more details on her adoption.
KSAR’s Life-Changing Rescue Work in Afghanistan
Each day, countless stray dogs in desperate need of love, food, shelter, and medical care roam the streets of Afghanistan. Some of these strays are dogs left behind by their previous owners after they fled the country following the Taliban takeover. Some are orphaned dogs. Others — a majority of them — are the outcome of breeding between unneutered and unspayed sprays.
And in a country where the pet ownership culture isn’t big, these lovely stray animals often face the worst while living in the tumultuous Afghan streets. On the brighter side, though, they have reasons to hope for better days, all thanks to the amazing work that Kabul Small Animal Rescue is doing to change the lives of these helpless animals.
Founded in 2018, KSAR has helped hundreds of cats and dogs start their lives in new countries. The rescue is staffed with full-time employees and veterinarians who selflessly provide ongoing care and rehabilitation to all dogs and felines bought in until each has a clean bill of health.
KSAR — which fully relies on donations from well-wishers to run their facility, including paying employee salaries — also depends on donations to cater for chartered flights for their rescued animals (those deemed fit to travel). The rescue has partnered with multiple rescue organizations across the U.S. that take in dogs (and felines) transported from Afghanistan, and it is through these U.S.-based rescues that these animals find the happy endings they never thought existed.
To New Beginnings, One Chattered Flight at a Time
It’s hard to imagine what the fate of strays in Afghanistan would have been without KSAR’s intervention. Today, many of the dogs flown from Afghanistan into the U.S. have already found loving, adoptive homes, and many others are closer than ever to getting their happy endings. Undoubtedly, the KSAR is a beacon of hope to these unwanted animals.
If we look at things from another angle, we can confidently say that it’s through these chartered flights that the KSAR is able to free up space in their facility to take in more needy stray dogs and give them fresh starts. KSAR’s commitment to changing the lives of Afghan strays serves as a reminder that all dogs, including strays, are deserving of a second chance at happiness.
