Ziggy, a striking 2-year-old white shepherd mix, is facing the unthinkable: euthanasia at the Apple Valley shelter in California. Labeled as “pending euthanasia” due to alleged growling and snapping during his initial intake exam, Ziggy’s story is a reminder of how fear can seal the fate of even the gentlest of dogs. (Watch video below)
“Ziggy’s will be euthanized on Tuesday Nov. 26th if no one steps up,” rescuers stated.
In a video shared by advocates, Ziggy appears calm, timid, and heartbreakingly vulnerable. Far from the image his intake notes suggest, he looks like a dog frozen in fear, not aggression. Shelters can be overwhelming for any animal, let alone one thrust into a chaotic, unfamiliar environment.
“Ziggy knows this isn’t a place where he’s safe,” says one rescuer. “His behavior isn’t aggression—it’s terror. And who can blame him?”
Ziggy #246841 is on Apple Valley CA's hit list for "growling and snapping multiple times during the initial exam process" – and can you blame him? You can see from his video he's a gentle pup who's absolutely terrified – he knows the monsters in this facility aren't there to… pic.twitter.com/VkIjjV045j

Despite his label, Ziggy is being described by those who’ve observed him as a gentle soul who simply needs someone willing to offer him a chance. Unfortunately, his time is almost up. Without a foster or adopter stepping forward by Tuesday, Ziggy will join the heartbreaking 75% of dogs who don’t make it out of Apple Valley alive.
The shelter system is failing dogs like Ziggy every day, advocates say. Without more resources or understanding, frightened behavior is often misinterpreted, leading to unnecessary euthanasia. Ziggy’s only crime is being scared.
There is still hope for Ziggy, but it requires urgent action. A commitment to foster or adopt could be the difference between life and death.
If you’ve ever thought about fostering or adopting, Ziggy’s story is a powerful reminder of the lives waiting to be saved. Could you be the one to give Ziggy the safe, loving home he so desperately needs? Reach out to the Apple Valley shelter or a rescue group today to help give this beautiful shepherd mix a second chance.
Every minute counts.
