Loyal, confident, courageous, and steady, the German Shepherd is truly a dog lover\\\'s delight. There are many reasons why German Shepherds stand in the front rank of canine royalty, but experts say their defining attribute is character: loyalty, courage, confidence, the ability to learn commands for many tasks, and the willingness to put their life on the line in defense of loved ones. German Shepherds will be gentle family pets and steadfast guardians, but, the breed standard says, there\\\'s a \\\'certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships.\\\'

  • Name: San Gabriel Valley Humane Society

Sparkles is a 2 year old female German Shepherd that has been at the shelter since January 27th, so by the time Rocky is able to sit with her, she was going on 2 weeks at San Gabriel Valley Humane Society. When Rocky is told about how she is struggling at the shelter by staff, he takes a trip to see where he could help. Based on her arrival record, she was running around managing to avoid Duarte Animal Control for almost a month before finally being captured. The timing coincides with the extreme fire situations in LA Country back in January, and although we don’t know much about her prior to Animal Control finding her, she may have been displaced due to the chaotic environment of the fires and evacuations.

Overall, Sparkles is extremely scared, but it’s easy to tell she’s sweet and has lots of personality waiting to come out – for example, according to staff, she carries her food bowl around, and she is starting to allow staff to pet her and give her treats. She will need an adopter that understands she will not transform overnight, and will take plenty of time with her knowing she may be slower at building trust, but we know the bond will be for a lifetime once gained. If you have a dog at home, please contact the shelter to arrange a meet and greet to ensure the dogs get along prior to making a decision. Sparkles is at San Gabriel Valley Humane Society in LA County, CA, and her ID is #59208.

***Please note that San Gabriel Valley Humane Society is unable to transport animals. Adoptions are first come, first serve. Pets must be visited with in person prior to an adoption. Rocky Kanaka is not responsible for adoption processes and interested parties must go through the shelter for more details on adopting.***
