Eugene is the kind of dog who doesn’t rush into your life—he eases in quietly, carefully, and with a whole lot of heart.

At 7 years old and just 11 pounds, this chi/doxie mix is a soft, sensitive little soul who was rescued after wandering in Illinois and finding himself overwhelmed in a busy shelter environment. Since entering foster care, he’s been gently unfolding into the sweetest version of himself.

Why Eugene Feels So Special
🐾 Gentle, quiet, and deeply sensitive nature
💛 Sweet “tail-wagging love bug” once he feels safe
🐶 Great with other small dogs
🚗 Does well in the car and travels calmly
🧠 Crate- and kennel-friendly, sleeps peacefully through the night

Eugene may be shy when meeting new people, but there’s no meanness or growliness in him—just caution and a need for reassurance. With patience, he begins to relax, showing his soft, affectionate side in small but meaningful ways.

He does especially well in calm environments and has been the quietest member of his foster home, happily coexisting with other small dogs. In familiar spaces, he enjoys lounging, resting near his people, and simply being part of the home.

His Personality
Eugene is cautious but kind, reserved but loving. He may take a day or two to warm up—especially with men—but once he trusts you, he becomes a loyal little shadow who enjoys gentle company and quiet companionship.

On walks, he’s polite and steady, occasionally pausing just to make sure his person is still nearby. In the yard or on a deck, he’s content to relax and observe the world at a calm, unhurried pace.

He is currently working on housetraining and has been using a belly band indoors as he continues to learn.

What He Is Looking For
✔️ A patient, gentle adopter who understands shy dogs
✔️ A calm home environment without pressure or fast expectations
✔️ A home with other small, friendly dogs (or as a solo dog with companionship)
✔️ Older children only, due to his nervousness
✔️ Someone who will give him time to fully settle and trust

Eugene isn’t looking for a fast bond—he’s looking for a safe one.

Heart of Eugene
There’s something quietly special about Eugene.

He doesn’t demand attention. He earns trust slowly. And when he finally feels safe, he gives you something incredibly pure—soft loyalty, gentle affection, and a presence that simply wants to be near you.

Eugene may be small, but his capacity for love is anything but.
