If you’ve ever wished for a best friend who’s always up for an adventure, look no further than Bruce. At two years old, this 66-pound bundle of uncontainable joy has been searching for his forever home for nearly a year. He’s got the kind of personality that lights up a room (and, admittedly, sometimes covers it in drool), and he’s ready to share his big, goofy heart with someone who’ll love him for all that he is—and maybe even his quirks.
Bruce arrived at Pet Helpers on December 18, 2023, and from the moment his paw hit the shelter floor, he had one mission: to soak up as much human love as possible. Bruce has never met a person he didn’t like. He’s the dog who greets every new friend with a wagging tail that moves faster than a metronome and an expression that screams, “Do you have treats? Or maybe a toy? Or both?”
But Bruce’s story isn’t without its challenges. When he came to us, he was heartworm positive, which meant months of treatment and strict rest—something that was pure torture for a dog as playful and energetic as Bruce. Through it all, he kept his spirits high, his tail wagging, and his eyes firmly set on the day he could run and play again. And now, with a clean bill of health, Bruce is making up for lost time. He’s a pro at tug-of-war, a champion fetcher, and the reigning king of slobbery kisses.
Yes, Bruce has a lot of energy. But that’s just part of his charm. His signature move? Excitedly shaking his head mid-walk, turning his slobber into streaks of “Bruce art” across his face. His leash manners are still a work in progress (his enthusiasm sometimes gets the better of him), but he’s a smart cookie and is eager to learn. With a bit of patience and a lot of love, Bruce could master just about anything.
So why is this incredible dog still waiting? Unfortunately, Bruce falls into the category of big, black, pittie mixes—a group that often gets overlooked in shelters. And while Bruce is all about people, he’s not a fan of other dogs, which means he’s best suited to a home where he can be the star of the show.
What Bruce needs is simple: a loving, child-free home with a fenced yard where he can stretch his legs and play to his heart’s content. A family (or person!) who appreciates solo adventures and sees Bruce not for what he’s missing, but for all the incredible things he has to offer. He might not be perfect, but who is? Bruce’s imperfections are what make him perfect for someone out there.
Shelter life, while full of care and compassion, isn’t where Bruce belongs. He’s a dog who thrives on human connection, and while we give him all the love we can, it’s not the same as having a family of his own. Every night, Bruce curls up in his kennel, dreaming of the day he’ll finally have a home where he can snuggle up beside his favorite person after a long day of playing.
Are you the person Bruce has been waiting for? Because he’s definitely the dog you’ve been waiting for—whether you knew it or not.
Visit Pet Helpers today to meet Bruce. He’s not just looking for a home; he’s looking for his soulmate. And when you meet him, you’ll see exactly why.
