32 Shelter Animals Rescued from Hurricane Helene Find Safety — How You Can Help
Fort Lauderdale, FL — After a lengthy journey across the state, 32 animals evacuated from North Florida shelters arrived safely at the Humane Society of Broward County on Wednesday, September 25th. The evacuees, consisting primarily of dogs, were transferred from shelters lacking safe indoor enclosures as Hurricane Helene approached, threatening the region with potential flooding and power outages.
The Humane Society team departed early in the day to meet a transport company in Ocala, FL, where they retrieved the animals from facilities more than 400 miles away. With the shelters in the storm’s path, the transfer was organized to ensure the safety of the animals as they awaited permanent homes.
Once at the Humane Society’s facility, the evacuated animals were given immediate care and made comfortable. “We are doing everything we can to help them feel safe and secure,” said a spokesperson from the Humane Society. The animals are currently being provided with food, treats, and toys, while enjoying the shelter’s air-conditioned environment.
@humanebroward Our Hurricane Helene evacuees arrived safe and sound after a long day of travel! 🌀 On Wednesday, September 25th, our team departed the shelter to meet a transport company in Ocala, FL to pick up 32 animals transferred from other shelters in North Florida. The animals are coming from shelters that do not have safe indoor enclosures for them. There is potential for flooding and power outages, so we must help these shelters in their time of need. The facilities are over 400 miles away and are preparing for the major storm. 🙏 We are doing our best to make them feel safe and comfortable while they wait for their forever families. They seem to be enjoying their stuffed animals, treats, and the central air conditioning! Our hope is to give the dogs time to settle in and have them available for adoption, possibly by the weekend. All of the pets are being looked at by our veterinary clinic before being made available for adoption. You will be able to see them on our website by the end of the week! ❤️ A huge thank you to everyone who helped with this transfer, making sure these animals feel safe and loved while they await their forever families! 🐾✨ To meet one of our adoptable pets, please complete the pre-adoption application at www.humanebroward.com and then stop by the Humane Society of Broward County located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, FL. Before becoming available for adoption, each of the animals will undergo a health evaluation at the shelter’s veterinary clinic. According to the Humane Society, some of the evacuees could be ready for adoption as early as the weekend. The organization is encouraging potential adopters to keep an eye on their website, where the animals will be listed by the end of the week.
The Humane Society also expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the transfer effort. “It’s been an incredible team effort to ensure these animals are safe and cared for while they await their forever homes,” the spokesperson said.
For those interested in adopting, the Humane Society of Broward County is located at 2070 Griffin Road in Fort Lauderdale, and the adoption center opens daily at 11 a.m. The shelter is also accepting donations to help cover the care of the newly arrived pets and to assist in future rescue efforts.
